Arts (Art Design) Core Courses

Introduction to Arts (6 credits)

Introduction to Arts serves as a basic course for art design. This course mainly introduces elements which include the essence and system of art, the content and form of works of art, the methodology of art appreciation, theories on art development, process and key techniques of art creation, with the purpose to help students understand the key terms and methodology of art studies, to obtain the knowledge of various phenomena and cultures concerning art, to develop students’ ability to appreciate works of art before they can explore and practice in the field of art creation.


Design and Sketch (5 credits)

Sketch serves as the basis for model design. Instead of emphasizing the conventional sketch training patterns, this course helps students learn the unique model design language by focusing on the abundant sketch language. The course is also aimed to develop students’ ability to describe the structure of an object while they improve the perspective in drawing so as to inspire students to find out problems independently, and depict objects on a micro level.


Decorative Color (5 credits)

This course serves as a basis for model design. It introduces the world’s major nations’ understanding of colors, i.e. the several major color systems generally used in design at present. This course helps students understand and feel colors, make use of the mood conveyed by different colors so as to realize the common feeling and unique language communicated by different colors. This course also aims to help students control the tone of pictures and apply colors to model design.


Introduction to Design (2 credits)

Based on the philosophy that the style of design is deeply rooted in the culture of a nation, this introductory course communicates knowledge about the areas where design is applied, in addition to the way of thinking and skills of design. The course also acquaints students with different nations’ design styles, and their development and changes besides helping students learn to adopt design software and strategies. With the focus on the harmonious unification of technique and culture, this course aims to express a social design philosophy whose core is the modes of thought, and whose purpose is to solve problems.


Material and Design (3 credits)

Following the idea that material serves as the basis for the creation of shapes, this basic course systematically introduces changes concerning material and design, the characteristics of various materials, the workmanship and processing methods of material, the relationship between material, formation and effect, the choice and calculation of material, and the principles of material use.


Hand Drawing (4 credits)

Hand drawing is not only an essential skill for a designer, but also the basis for art design. This course focuses on the training of the hand drawing for various designs concerning architecture, interior space and environment, models of industrial products etc. This course also helps students master the various presentations and skills of design and drawing in order to adapt students to the practical work.


Computer-aided Design (12 credits)

This course helps students learn to use the most up-to-date computer design tools and techniques so as to broaden the students’ horizons and encourage the exchange and innovation of computer design skills.


Plane Composition (4 credits)

This course mainly introduces how to decompose, compose and construct ideal two-dimensional forms with the elements of a model which includes points, lines, and planes in order to help students find the various possible combinations of the basic shapes on a plane, and develop the logic and imagination in the process of modeling.


Vertical Composition (4 credits)

Vertical composition serves as the foundation of model design and requires students to create designs. This course helps students study shapes and space to explore various vertical shapes and understand the philosophy and methodology of model design in three dimensions. The course is also aimed to improve students’ understanding and their imagination of objects in three dimensions, and develop their capacity to create three-dimensional visual images.


Color Composition (4 credits)

Color composition serves as the foundation of model design. This course introduces principles on how the elements of color are composed, in addition to the knowledge about the change of colors with the change of space, quality and quantity. The course also helps students understand the property, the visual effects and the psychological influence exerted by color language so as to improve students’ taste for colors and their skills to use colors in design.


Human Engineering (3 credits)

With a focus on the relationship between human, machine and the environment, the study of human engineering provides theory and methodology to solve problems concerning the efficiency and health of human beings in the human-machine-environment system. This course greatly assists art design, and helps students understand that the design should be based on human beings and the form should follow the function.


Basic Photography (4 credits)

This course not only develops students’ skills and creativity in photography, but also provides students with the resources and inspiration to explore and think, and consequently develop their cultural realization and the ability to express their ideas by taking photos. The course essentially helps students learn to utilize such ability to do various designs.


Script Design (1 credit)

This course helps students learn the design of various scripts which includes the design of Chinese scripts, English scripts and artistic scripts. Students are encouraged to create original designs and to integrate script, script shapes into various designs.


Model Making (4 credits)

Model serves as an essential part of design. This course helps students learn to skillfully select models, use tools, make and reconstruct models. The course also helps students make models to assist the design, express their creative ideas, receive the design effect through model making and then practically apply model making to the design of architecture, indoor environment and industrial products.

Area of Concentration: Industrial Design

Introduction to Industrial Design (4 credits)

Introduction to Industrial Design is a basic course in the discipline. It not only enables the students to grasp information concerning history, methodology and tactics of modern industrial design sector, but also develops the students’ practical designing capacity, and cultivates the students’ designing interest in line with social values. In addition, it enables the students to express themselves through designing and realize the commercial value of their works.


Product Research and Development Design (5 credits)

This course emphasizes the concept that product design should be human-oriented and serve society. It aims to acquaint the students with correct procedures and methodologies in product design and enables the students to independently complete and improve their design. It also cultivates the students’ practical ability in filing and implementing product research and development design under the current commercial environment.


Product Presenting Tactics (5 credits)

Product Presenting Tactics is a compulsory course in industrial design. It covers the basis, tactics and basic training in products representing, and the relationship between computer-assisted diagram and hand-drawn diagram. It also teaches students how to draw effect pictures of product design and produce product models. It enables students to understand various methods in presenting products in a systematic way, and improve their capacity in presenting product design accurately, vividly and artistically.


Product Manufacturing Process (5 credits)

This is a basic course in the discipline of industrial design. It systematically introduces the processes and procedures in product manufacturing. It also touches upon related knowledge of site management and cost control. By offering students opportunities of practical training, it helps students reach the unity of technical nature and artistic form in designing.


Area of Concentration: Environmental Design

Introduction to Environmental Art Design (2 credits)

Introduction to Environmental Art Design is a specialized prerequisite course for students concentrating in the area of environmental design. It involves the various fields of environmental design, like exterior design, square design, landscape design, street design, sight design, city layout and so on. It focuses on training the students to adeptly use each design skill and make artistic designs from different angles, such as physiological, psychological, cultural and commercial angles.


History of Chinese and Foreign Architecture (3 credits)

This course is designed to help students understand the elementary knowledge of architectural art, to train students to link up China and the West, to form cultural bearing and to nourish their design inspiration and their awareness of harmonious environment by introducing the achievements of architectural art and its unique styles at different historical periods in China and the world.


Architectural Design (5 credits)

Architecture is connected with environmental science and art. This subject aims to develop students’ designing proficiency on structure, function, environmental protection and visual effect, through cultivating their understanding of the role of architectural design in environment. It also cultivates the students’ practical ability in design and their creativity in solving problems.


Design of Public Environmental Art (5 credits)

This course helps students understand the effects of different space, landscape and building on the public environmental art through their contacts and experiences with different styles in public environmental design. It helps the students form the idea of designing for life and develop students’ practical designing technique.


Landscape Design (5 credits)

This course aims to teach students to make landscape design in a cultural, scientific and aesthetic way. This capability is based on the deep understanding of the local culture and landscape function as well as a creative employment of knowledge and skills.


Area of Concentration: Interior Design

History of Chinese and Foreign Interior Design (2 credits)

By explaining the characteristics of Chinese and foreign interior design along with its changes, this subject aims to develop students’ thinking ability and quality in this field. It not only enables them to gain the capacity of scientific and artistic designing, but also form the concept of “creation for life”.


Basic Interior Design (4 credits)

Design is a creation rather than a decoration. Basic Interior Design is a course to introduce the methodology of various interior designs. In this way, students are able to put the skills that they have acquired into their designing practice and improve their ability of independent designing.


Furniture Design (4 credits)

Furniture Design is an important part of Interior Design. This course aims to introduce the brief history of furniture development and the features of Chinese and foreign furniture in different periods. It enables students to grasp the methodology and procedure of furniture designing, promote their craftsmanship of furniture manufacturing and cultivate their appreciating and designing capacity.


Display Design (4 credits)

Display Design is a basic course in this discipline. It emphasizes the designing elements together with their systematic combination. It cultivates students’ capability of human-oriented display design to create different environmental atmospheres.


Lighting Design (3 credits)

This course helps students master the principles of lighting technique, related data, materials and crafts, acquaints students with the history of city environmental lighting, and equips students with the primary skills to make environmental lighting design.


Spatial Design (3 credits)

This course provides students with the opportunities to explore the fashions of modern spatial design, basic concepts and trends. Students will master the techniques of spatial partition and scene design. With an emphasis on human, time, and environment, this course aims at creating spatial designs that satisfy both practical and artistic needs.


Elective Courses

Jewelry Design (3 credits)

While appreciating various masterpieces of jewelry design, students will gain a better understanding of traditional handcrafts, modern design models and manufacturing arts. Through hands-on training, students will master basic jewelry design skills.


Toy Design (3 credits)

This course teaches main styles and manufacturing arts of toy, the strengths and limitations of various materials and craftsmanship. Students will master several basic toy design methods, and be able to develop new types of toy.


Art Psychology (3 credits)

Art Psychology briefly introduces the artistic theories of some great psychologists such as Arnheim, Freud, Adler, and Jung. Students will explore the principles of artistic creation, as well as a variety of psychological phenomena in artistic appreciation and creation. The course also teaches the relations between artistic design and consumer psychology, environment and art psychology, design ideas and designer’s psychology, as well as the application of art psychology.


Arts Administration (3 credits)

Arts Administration is a newly developed interdisciplinary field that combines theories and practices. This course analyzes the whole process of artistic production, performing, and appreciation, and provides insights into the domain and methods of arts administration. Students will be acquainted with the advanced expertise in arts administration, including strategic planning, fund raising, grant writing, program designing, emergency response, audience developing, volunteer recruitment, theater development, financial management, marketing, and art policy.


Basics of Law (2 credits)

This course helps students grasp the principles of law and basic knowledge of administrative law, civil law, intellectual property law, economic law, criminal law, litigation law as well as legal document writing abilities.


Exhibition Design and Planning (4 credits)

This course describes the history, features, and classifications of exhibition planning, and teaches the basic knowledge of space partition, materials and structures, scene design techniques, and synthesized effects of lighting and multimedia. The course also helps to foster the belief of “Exhibition Communicates Ideas and Directs Life Style” among students.


Environmental Botanic Design (2 credits)

Environment Botanic Design explores the relationships between environment and human, and between environmental design and ecology. This course helps students understand the application of botanic and ecological techniques in the field of environmental design. Students will recognize the importance of “ecology-oriented environmental design”, and engage in the environmental design that integrates botanic consideration into architecture.


Environmental Color Design (2 credits)

Environmental Color Design helps students understand the functions and features of various colors, and examine the impacts of environment on human life, behavior, and mentality. This course also provides students with the opportunity to learn plenty of environmental color design skills and improve their artistic creativity.


Energy Conservation Design (2 credits)

Through studying the cases of excellent energy conservation design in residential and public architectures in the world, students will understand various energy conservation techniques and their application in architectural designs. As a result, students will be able to integrate energy conservation techniques and artistic consideration into their designs.


Feng-Shui Studies (2 credits)

Feng-Shui is the soul of Chinese traditional architecture. Feng-Shui Studies, House Building, and Garden Building constitute the three pillars of Chinese ancient architectural theory. This course teaches the theories and methods of Feng-Shui studies, the applications of Feng-Shui theory in modern environmental design, and the relations between human and nature from perspective of Feng-Shui..


Commercial Photography (3 credits)

While studying traditional photography and digital photography, students will be equipped with the knowledge of operating art firms, advertising companies, and commercial photography studios. Students are expected to master photographic techniques and have the ability to pursue commercial photography career.


Advertisement Design (2 credits)

Advertisement Design helps students master the principles and practices of designing and making commercial advertisements and posters. This course analyzes the functions of advertising, relations among various factors of design, as well as their effects. Students will be trained in the accuracy, clarity and originality of information communication.


Web Page Design (2 credits)

This course provides students with the techniques in updating and managing website, as well as the opportunity to appreciate and analyze web page designs. Students are expected to master various skills to design web pages of aesthetic and practical values.   


Animated Cartoon Design (2 credits)

Animated Cartoon Design teaches the principles and techniques of two-dimensional animated cartoon design. Through explaining specific works and engaging hands-on learning, this course will enable students to design and make diverse interactive works, including movies, pictures, and cartoons. As well, students will be capable of animating presentations and establishing websites.


Multimedia Design (2 credits)

This course helps students learn interactive multimedia design, with emphasis on multimedia software development, movie making, three-dimensional animated cartoon design, and website design. Students will have the ability of planning, creating, developing, and designing the customer-oriented interactive multimedia products, which are market competitive and user-friendly.


Tourist Souvenir Design (3 credits)

Tourist Souvenir is the core of the tourist industry. Tourist Souvenir Design is a specialized course designed in accordance with the current travel trends and practical circumstances in Macao. With the concept that product design should be human-oriented, this course aims to cultivate students' ability in exploring the aesthetic values of the material products as well as the basis of their cultural values. Meanwhile, it also helps students to design tourist souvenirs in a systematical way.

This course is designed to strengthen students’ foundation in English by increasing their knowledge of grammar and expanding their vocabulary. Through interactive class activities and discussions as well as writing assignments, students can improve their skills in English listening, speaking, reading and writing.


University Chinese (3 credits)

This course aims to improve students’ ability to write and communicate in Chinese. The course includes such topics as the fundamental structure of the Chinese language, Chinese reading and comprehension, practical writing, academic essay writing, and Mandarin speaking and communication.


Advanced Mathematics (3 credits)

This course aims at providing students with basic concepts, theories and calculation methods in analyzing math problems. Students will learn to analyze and solve math problems, which lays a solid foundation for their further studies and professional career development.

This course introduces the origin, evolution and structure of the celestial bodies and the universe, the planets, comets, satellites and meteor in the solar system, astronomical observation and the development of human knowledge about the universe.

This course introduces the basic methods of creative problem solving(CPS) summarized by American specialists of Creative Studies, Alex Osborn and Sidney J. Parnes, and helps students to enhance their ability to solve some difficult problems in their study and lives. This course is a bilingual one.

Chinese drama has a long history with its peaks in Yuan Dynasty. Since then, Chinese drama has been passed on from generation to generation. This course introduces the origin and evolution of Chinese drama, its various drama families, singing tones, performances, roles and acting. This course will provide an introduction to Chinese drama and an opportunity for students to watch a typical drama for a better knowledge of Chinese drama through visual education.

 

Selective Readings of Contemporary Chinese Novels (1 credit)

This course introduces all schools of modern Chinese literature and their masterpieces. Contemporary Chinese writers created many excellent writings during those days of tremendous social changes; some of them have gained international recognition. Students will be guided systematically to read these writings and get to know more about the Chinese society through the appreciation of contemporary Chinese literature.

 

Research and Practice on Contemporary Poems (1) (1 credit)

This course introduces the features and achievements of contemporary poems, and guides students to practice creating poems.

Selective Readings of Masterpieces in World Literature (1) (1 credit)

This course selects some masterpieces of world literature for close reading and study. Under supervision, students will learn about the writers of the selected readings, their backgrounds, and the circumstances at the time of their writing, their writing styles and characteristics, social impacts, etc. This course will help students to expand their horizons, to increase their knowledge about world literatureto develop their own aptitude for writing and to cherish a love for literature.

 

Selective Readings of Masterpieces in World Literature (2) (1 credit)

This course selects some masterpieces of world literature for close reading and study. Appreciation of Chinese Music  (1 credit)

Chinese music is unique in its own style with eastern characteristics. The appreciation of Chinese music is a means to the perfection of personal moral integrity. Through this course, students will enjoy a selection of musical masterpieces ranging from ancient to modern times. They will also gain a basic knowledge of Chinese music, its melody and characteristics.


Appreciation of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (1 credit)

This course provides a general introduction of Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as prominent Chinese painting artists and calligraphers. Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy has its unique features and style, embodied by numerous painters and calligraphers in the past two thousand years. The course introduces the artistic characteristics of different times, regions and schools of artists, helping students gain the ability to appreciate Chinese painting and calligraphy and develop a taste for art.

 

Appreciation of Western Arts   (1 credit)

This course is designed for the appreciation of the great works of the Western fine arts. Plenty of elaborate artistic works have been created in the Western countries in the past thousands of years, especially since the Renaissance period. This course aims to enhance students’ artistic qualities by introducing them to different styles of Western art, the artistic features of different countries and different times, guiding them to appreciate masterpieces of art and explaining the implications and impacts of the artistic works.


Appreciation of Western Music (1 credit)

This course introduces the origins and features of Western musical works of different schools, times and regions. It also introduces the great works of world masters, especially after the Renaissance period, and their implications. Musical works, whether composed from the 10th century to the 17th century, or played with various musical instruments, including those modern and super-modern pieces, will be included in this course.


Appreciation of Culture and Arts (1 credit)

This course aims to cultivate students’ love of arts and culture for the perfection of their moral integrity through the appreciation of a series of cultural and artistic performances.


Appreciation of World Movie Masterpieces (1 credit)

Since their inception, movies have been a significant aspect of social culture and have exerted lasting impacts upon society. Through lectures and expositions of the masterpieces of world movies, this course helps students to appreciate the art of movies and understand them in terms of their history and development, styles and relation to the time of shooting.


Appreciation of Photographic Art (1 credit)

Photography is a new category of art. It has changed people’s perceptions of drawing. This course introduces students to a variety of artistic photographs and the art of photographing, and helps them to learn how to appreciate such works of art and how to create artistic photographs.
