Study Plan for Master of Design

I. Program Aims

This program is designed to provide students who are interested in earning a master’s degree in design with the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and skills in the areas of practice of art design, design management, and cultural heritage conservation.

II. Duration of Study

The regular duration of study is 2 years. The maximum duration of study for full-time students is 3 years. The maximum duration of study for part-time non-Mainland Chinese students is 4 years. The study is divided into the following two parts: 18 months of course study and no less than 6 months of thesis writing.

VI. Course Contents

At least 43 credits must be earned to complete the program. Requirements are as below:

  1. Core Courses – 12 credits;
  2. Major Core Courses – 9 credits;
  3. Elective Courses – 12 credits;
  4. Academic Activities – 1 credit
  5. Internship – 3 credits;
  6. Design work – 3 credits;
  7. Thesis – 3 credits;

VII. Teaching Requirements

  1. Students must complete the 3 core courses as shown in Table 1, the 2 major core courses in Table 2, and the 4 elective courses in Table 3. They are also required to attend at least 10 academic activities and complete their internship and design work in Table 4. Students who successfully complete these requirements will obtain 40 credits.
  2. Students who complete a research thesis which is not less than 20,000 words and successfully pass the oral defense will obtain 3 credits.
  3. Students who complete all the courses regulated by the study plan and pass the thesis defense can apply for the degree of Master of Design.
  4. Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Master Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has:

    a) completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period*

    b) abided by the regulations of the University

    c) cleared all fees and charges and returned all University property and equipment borrowed

    * Students admitted from the academic year 2017/2018 onwards are required to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (excluding thesis/dissertation) in order to graduate.

  5. If a student passes all the courses but fails to pass the final defense during the specified period, he or she only can submit an application for coursework completion.

VIII. Remarks

  1. The study plan and curriculum is based on the formal announcement of the BoletimOficial da Região Administrativa Especial de Macau.
  2. Please note that if there is insufficient enrollment in a major, the university has the right to cancel the major.
  3. The arrangement of major and elective courses is subject to change based on demand and availability.
