Core Courses in Journalism and Communication
Introduction to Economics (3 credits)
This course introduces basic theories and concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics. The economics of business enterprise and aggregate economic behavior will be discussed. Content includes the theory of business enterprise, supply and demand, market structures, resource allocation, government policies, role of government, monetary and fiscal policy; national income, economic growth, price theory, and full employment.
Introduction to Psychology (2 credits)
This course introduces the basic theories of psychology. Topics covered include the basic mental process, developmental psychology, social psychology and personality psychology.
Sociology (2 credits)
This course introduces students to the theoretical framework and thoughts of sociology, and then employing such concepts and theories together with empirical evidences to study and analyze human society, social behavior and other social phenomena.
Introduction to Journalism (3 credits)
The course presents an outline of journalism and an overview of the current issues and problems in the field. The course is designed to provide students with a better understanding of journalism and an acute judgment of the value of news, to equip them with essential knowledge for their future study in news covering, writing and editing.
Introduction to Communication (3 credits)
The aim of this course is to introduce students with the basic theories and research methods of communication, making them aware of the relationship between communication theory, research and methods used.
Marketing (3 credits)
This course aims to introduce the basic marketing principles and their application in real business situations. The topics discussed cover the analysis of market opportunities, selection of target markets, development of the market mix and management of the marketing activities. Emphasis is placed on entire marketing programs in order to equip students with skills to make optimal marketing decisions.
Advertising (3 credits)
This course introduce process of advertising production and implementation, changes in advertising industry, relationship between advertising and marketing, concepts of persuasive advertising, creative advertising, and media of advertising. Students will also be able to appreciate and evaluate various forms of advertising.
Introduction to News Service (3 credits)
This course aims at the practical needs of news service. The content covers all the basic knowledge and skills required by journalists, among which are theories and strategies in interviewing, basic requirements and methods involved in news writing, basic theories and major approaches used in news editing, and theories and practice in the field of criticism; therefore it integrates high-standard theories with adequate practice. Accordingly students are required not only to grasp the basic theories of news service but also to be skilled in all kinds of practical work, such as collecting, writing, editing and commenting of news, that is, they should be equipped with both in-depth theories and practical skills.
Business Statistics (3 credits)
This course focuses on the analysis of data and the theories of probability and statistics. Content includes probability, statistical distribution, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression, multiple regression, and random process.
Internet Content Design and Creation (2 credits)
This course guides students to create web pages to their own tastes, that is, to integrate all the related recourses into a web page which is rich in content and unique in style.
Integrated Marketing Communication (3 credits)
The course uses an integrated approach to study marketing and communication. Special emphasis is placed on its theories, basic concepts, media use, planning procedures and case studies. Students will have a view not only on communications, but also on wider and deeper interdisciplinary scopes such as management, organization, and marketing.
Cross-cultural Communication (2 credits)
Students are expected to put theories and basic knowledge of communication into practice, study various thoughts systematically so as to inspect communication with a broader view and develop awareness and competence to deal with cross-cultural diversity.
Public Relations (2 credits)
This course provides concepts, theories, definitions, operations, ethics and role of public relations. It also introduces public relations strategies adopted in various practices.
New Communication Media and Development (3 credits)
This is an introduction to and analysis of current and emerging communication media and their relation to societal development. This course will also discuss developments and strategies between new media and conventional media.
Media Operation and Management (2 credits)
The course is an in-depth discussion about: the operation and management of wireless TV, cable TV, satellite TV, digital TV and other TV media; their production, delivery, advertising, system and channel provision. Furthermore, TV and media merging, strategic alliances and integration of future new 4C communication technologies will also be explored in this course.
Laws and Ethics of Communications (2 credits)
This course introduces basic laws and legal issues in communication and media. It also covers legal aspects and typical law cases in the communication industry. Political, economical and social cultural factors inherent in communication laws will be discussed.
Advertisement Planning and Creation (3 credits)
This course introduces basic theories of advertisement planning and creation as well as its significance in advertising. Students will be acquainted with the influence and constraints of social progress and development on advertisement planning and creation, and the resulting impact on marketing plans and brand creation. This will provide students with a comprehensive and solid foundation for professional skills in advertisement planning and creation.
Media Strategies and Planning (2 credits)
This course guides students to enrich their knowledge of the nature, types, features, framework and structure of press media. Students will be acquainted with the formulation of media strategies and planning to optimize communication effect. This course covers the integration and optimization of different kinds of media based on their characteristics, functions, coverage, broadcasting frequency, continuance and impact.
Market Research (3 credits)
This course introduces the use of scientific methods in identifying and resolving marketing management problems. It emphasizes the process of designing, conducting, analyzing, interpreting, and applying marketing research as a means of support for marketing management decisions. In this course, the traditional classroom lectures and discussions of marketing research concepts and theory will be supplemented with hands-on projects and field research.
Fundamentals of Photography (2 credits)
The course introduces the types of photographical devices, the structure of cameras, operation of flashlights and photographic techniques, especially image creation of black and white photographs.
Techniques in Communication (3 credits)
This course focuses on the fundamentals and main methods of communication, including the theories, types, basic skills, strategies and practice of communication. The course will equip students with a rich knowledge of modern communication theories and enhance their communication skills.
Mass Media and Social Changes (2 credits)
This course studies mass media in the contexts of politics, economics and law and focuses on the relationship between mass media and social changes. The course, with emphasis on sociological research methodologies and integration with modern technical education, aims at enriching students’ knowledge of the practical operation of conventional and modern communication technologies, technological progress, and the trends and effects of communication technology on media, enterprises and society.
Internet Marketing and Planning (2 credits)
This course guides students to enrich their knowledge of how to make transactions on the internet, how to apply for virtual stores and how to change traditional marketing 4P into internet marketing 4C and to foster their conceptions, skills and common sense of online marketing.
Communication Research Methodology (3 credits)
This course introduces students to the scientific methods of research on communication, that is, the approaches adopted by researchers to explore the nature and law of communication by exploiting such methods of social sciences and behavioral science as statistics, logics, devising of questionnaires.

News Reporting and Writing (4 credits)
This course introduces students to the basic skills of news reporting and writing and their application in various news media. It aims at enriching students’ knowledge of a journalist’s responsibility, the nature of journalism, news resources, interview techniques, value judgment, and the structure and basic principles of writing.
News Editing and Editorial Writing (4 credits)
News editing and editorial writing, the basic qualifications for a journalist, play a vital part in news communication. The course puts special emphasis on interactions between theory and practice and aims at equipping students with the basic theories, general knowledge and writing skills of news as well as analyzing and commenting on news media publications to improve their skills in news editing and editorial writing.
In-depth Reporting (2 credits)
This course guides students to the exploitation of the methods in anthropology, psychology and sociology to observe and conduct face-to-face in-depth interviews, and to organize and analyze interview materials. Such skills will prepare them for on-the-spot reporting.
History of Foreign Journalism and Communication (2 credits)
This course mainly enriches students’ knowledge of the development of communication and the various systems of newspapers, radio and television journalism. The history and systems of journalism and communication in various countries will also be discussed. This course also probes into the relationship between the news communication system and the operation of power, the role of new media as an agent for those in power and the manifestation of the ideas and values of news professionals.

This course mainly enriches students’ knowledge of the development of communication and the various changes in journalism involving newspaper, radio and television. This course introduces the history of world communication, the integration of various kinds of communication in the western countries and their influence upon human society. Students will be equipped with a clear understanding of the current communication environment, the patterns and the trend of world communication.
Principles and Application of Journalism and Communication via the Internet (3 credits)
This course mainly introduces the application of the internet in communication, including the development, consequent impacts, communicative functions and characteristics of the internet, the comparison and application of the internet in various industries, the prospects of online journalism and communication, and conclusion.
Interpersonal Communication (2 credits)
People in modern society need to communicate with each other via mass media. The lack of interpersonal communication channels may cause tension on interpersonal relationship. This course aims at enhancing students’ communicative ability by broadening the students’ horizons in the field of communication and enriching their knowledge of communication principles and theories.
Computer Aided Journalism (2 credits)
The course introduces different office automation systems commonly used in journalism. Computer assisted journalism, a new way of news reporting, will also be introduced. Students will learn how to access the internet websites for gathering news, collecting and analyzing information from the public or private databases. It covers four aspects, including computer assisted reporting, computer assisted reference, computer assisted research and computer assisted rendezvous.
Introduction to Internet Communication (2 credits)
This course elaborates on the basic concepts, distinguishing features and the process of creation of internet communication. It equips students with basic theories and knowledge about modern communication as well as basic skills in the field of internet communication to meet the requirements for communication in the context of information society and knowledge-based economy.
Media and Society (2 credits)
On the basis of social theories, the course analyzes the relationship between visual media, society and culture so as to help students understand the contents communicated by visual media and realize the impact of such media on society.
Major: Advertising
Media Morphology (2 credits)
This course probes into the morphological characteristics, operation and evolution of media, and meanwhile analyzes the development of major mass media in order to lay the foundation for the choice of media for advertising objectives. Students are required to master the basic characteristics, patterns and current situations of all kinds of media and to be able to conduct case studies based on related theories.
Advertisement Writing (2 credits)
This course helps students obtain some basic ideas of the content and format of advertisement writing and nurture students’ ability in creative writing in the areas of record, practice, news and business advertisement.
Art Design in Advertisement (3 credits)
The course is intended to help students obtain some basic knowledge and skills of art design in advertisement, including the characteristics of various media for advertisements and the skills of producing advertising pictures. Students will be equipped with techniques in planning, designing and producing advertisements.
Advertisement Aesthetics (2 credits)
Based on the aesthetic theories, some advertisements are chosen from a variety of media for case studies in this course to enhance students’ ability to appreciate advertisements from an aesthetical perspective and improve their artistic editing of pictures and words.
Advertising Studies (2 credits)
This course is intended to equip students with knowledge about the advertisement industry. It discusses the systems regulating advertising agents and their clients, the features of various advertising media, the design and purchase of advertisement, the assessment of advertising effect, international advertising, law and ethics of advertisement, and the relationship between advertising and society.
Consumer Behavior (3 credits)
This course studies the consumer as a problem solver and buying decision process. Content includes factors influencing consumer behavior, corresponding principles, theories and models. Students will acquire skills to employ the data developed by behavioral science to discern and explain consumer behavior. Emphasis is placed on integrating this data into current marketing practices.
Visual Communication ( 2 credits)
This course focuses on the content of visual communication, the close relationship between visual art and visual communication, and the perception of visual images. It also covers various sources of moving visual images, such as traditional visual art, movies and TV programs, and introduces the theories and applications of visual art with the purpose of improving the students’ knowledge and developing their analytical and critical thinking abilities in this area.

Management and Administration of Advertisement (2 credits)
This course introduces the management and administration of advertisement and its developing strategies and trends. It gives an introduction to the advertisement industry, the organization and operation of advertising and processes of media conception and creative design strategies as well as the interactive relationship of marketing and advertisement.
Printing and Advertising (3 credits)
The course mainly introduces the digital printing and publishing system which is developing rapidly in the last few years. The course provides students with the basic knowledge of printing and the categorization and application of various types of digital printing in the current market with the purpose of helping students understand its relationships with advertisements.
Digital Art (2 credits)
The combination of digital technique and art is a social, political and economic issue. The course focuses on the aesthetical characteristics of traditional and digital photography in order to inspire students to create original digital art.
Public Opinion (2 credits)
This course helps students to understand the phenomena and theories of public opinion, and to cultivate their ability of analyzing public opinion and grasping its regular patterns for the performance of its guiding role. This course also aims at establishing connecting points between the patterns of public opinion and journalism.
Advertising Film Planning and Production (2 credits)
This course helps students to obtain a general view on the procedures and principles of creating and planning a print advertisement. Details include the procedures and operations of a print advertisement. Media theories and production procedures will also be discussed. As a result, students will be able to develop a general understanding of advertisement planning and production.
Broadcasting and Television News (2 credits)
Students will develop skills in broadcasting and television news editing. In terms of broadcasting news, this course will help students understand the procedures of news gathering and editing and will provide them with practical training in broadcasting. In terms of TV news, this course will help students understand the format and layout of TV news, including selecting news, arranging news order, and the use of headlines and video clips.
Fundamentals of Network Communication (2 credits)
This course introduces and analyzes the current development of the fixed telephone network, the mobile network and the computer network, including the development of hardware facilities, characteristics of different network industries and the trends of privatization of public telecommunication companies. It will provide students with an analytical framework of basic telecommunication industry and discuss the supply and demand of telecommunication industry, industry standard, the competition and cooperation strategies among producers and business patterns under the current regulatory policies.
Computerized Publication Design (3 credits)
This course introduces to students the use of software in publication design. Students will get knowledge about typesetting and design theory,develop a sound computing typesetting style and heighten their ability of computerized publication design.
Audiovisual Editing (3 credits)
This course, using the computer editing system, introduces students to the basic skills and principles of audio & video clip editing, and how to deal with films of different types and with different emotions.
Audiovisual Production (3 credits)
In this course, students will be divided into small groups for film shooting simulation and script writing (documentary, experimental films, newsreels and commercial films). This course will focus on the division of labor in the operations of the filmmaking industry for the improvement of students’ skills.
Media Criticism (2 credits)
Mass media plays a more and more important role in society. This course aims at providing students majoring in mass media with a good understanding of the profession that they are going to take so as to extend its strengths, limit its weaknesses and to make media serve the society in a better way.
Advertising Culture (2 credits)
This course introduces the cultural function of advertisement, the manifestations of the advertising culture, the relationship between advertising and traditional culture, advertising and popular culture, linguistic culture, aesthetic culture, the principles of criticism in the advertising culture and the cultural qualities of advertising professionals.
Communication Strategy (2 credits)
With the purpose of familiarizing students with communication strategies and preparing them for social occasions in different countries, this course aims at improving students’ verbal and non-verbal communication skills, organizing abilities and debating skills.
Photograph Analysis (2 credits)
This course aims at equipping students with knowledge about how to analyze and appreciate photographs and professional photographing including photographs of humans, objects, creative visual works and news reports. This course also provides a general view on professional cameras, use of lens, editing of photos and control of lights in the studio.

Traditional novels are an important part of the classical literature treasure of China. The novels of Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty are well known especially. This course introduces some typical ones of traditional Chinese novels and guides students to appreciate such a kind of literature works.
Appreciation of Chinese Drama (1 credit)
Chinese drama has a long history with its peaks in Yuan Dynasty. Since then, Chinese drama has been passed on from generation to generation. This course introduces the origin and evolution of Chinese drama, its various drama families, singing tones, performances, roles and acting. This course will provide an introduction to Chinese drama and an opportunity for students to watch a typical drama for a better knowledge of Chinese drama through visual education.
Selective Readings of Contemporary Chinese Novels (1 credit)
This course introduces all schools of modern Chinese literature and their masterpieces. Contemporary Chinese writers created many excellent writings during those days of tremendous social changes; some of them have gained international recognition. Students will be guided systematically to read these writings and get to know more about the Chinese society through the appreciation of contemporary Chinese literature.

Chinese music is unique in its own style with eastern characteristics. The appreciation of Chinese music is a means to the perfection of personal moral integrity. Through this course, students will enjoy a selection of musical masterpieces ranging from ancient to modern times. They will also gain a basic knowledge of Chinese music, its melody and characteristics.
Appreciation of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (1 credit)
This course provides a general introduction of Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as prominent Chinese painting artists and calligraphers. Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy has its unique features and style, embodied by numerous painters and calligraphers in the past two thousand years. The course introduces the artistic characteristics of different times, regions and schools of artists, helping students gain the ability to appreciate Chinese painting and calligraphy and develop a taste for art.
Appreciation of Western Arts (1 credit)
This course is designed for the appreciation of the great works of the Western fine arts. Plenty of elaborate artistic works have been created in the Western countries in the past thousands of years, especially since the Renaissance period. This course aims to enhance students’ artistic qualities by introducing them to different styles of Western art, the artistic features of different countries and different times, guiding them to appreciate masterpieces of art and explaining the implications and impacts of the artistic works.
Appreciation of Western Music (1 credit)
This course introduces the origins and features of Western musical works of different schools, times and regions. It also introduces the great works of world masters, especially after the Renaissance period, and their implications. Musical works, whether composed from the 10th century to the 17th century, or played with various musical instruments, including those modern and super-modern pieces, will be included in this course.
