Study Plan for Master of Fine Arts

I. Program Aims

This program is designed to enable students to acquire abilities in practice led research with artistic vision and critical thinking in contemporary art, which lays solid theoretical foundation for further art development. The program will allow students to become compound talents with creative thinking and outstanding drawing ability. The program includes two majors: Painting Practice and Theory; History of Fine Arts.

II. Duration of Study

The normal duration of study is 2 years. The maximum duration of study for full-time students is 3 years. The maximum duration of study for part-time non-Mainland Chinese students is 4 years. The study is divided into the following two parts: 18 months of course study and 6 months of thesis writing.

VI. Teaching Requirements

  1. Students must successfully complete the courses as shown in Table 1 and Table 2.
  2. Students majoring in History of Fine Arts are required to do the internship in the designated semesters. Please refer to the Internship Guidebook for Master Students.
  3. Students majoring in Painting Practice and Theory are required to complete a research thesis which is not less than 15,000 words and should submit at least one piece of work of fine art to get approved by the committee, otherwise they are not qualified to apply for defense. If students successfully pass the oral defense will obtain 6 credits. Students majoring in History of Fine Arts are required to complete a research thesis which is not less than 20,000 words and successfully pass the oral defense will obtain 9 credits.
  4. Students who complete all the courses regulated by the study plan and pass the thesis oral defense can apply for the degree of Master of Fine Arts.
  5. Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Master Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has:
    a) completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period*
    b) abided by the regulations of the University
    c) cleared all fees and charges and returned all University property and equipment borrowed
    * Students admitted from the academic year 2017/2018 onwards are required to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (excluding thesis/dissertation) in order to graduate.
  6. If a student passes all the courses but fails to pass the final defense during the specified period, he or she only can submit an application for coursework completion.

VII. Remarks:

  1. The study plan and curriculum is aligned with the formal announcement of the BoletimOficial da Região Administrativa Especial de Macau.
  2. Please note that if there is insufficient enrollment in a major, the university has the right to cancel the major.
  3. The arrangement of major and elective courses is subject to change based on demand and availability.

Remark: In the event of any discrepancies between the Chinese and English version of this study plan, the Chinese version will prevail.
