Dean's Message
I wish to welcome to the Faculty of Information Technology!
|
It can be said that our lives would be much poorer had it not been the advances in IT in the past few decades. We are fortunate to live in this era, in which we are both the users and promoters of IT. In our Faculty, we create and develop some of the latest advances in IT which will affect our lives. For example, some of our staff members work with scientists in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, through the data sent back from the Chinese Lunar Probe Chang’E-1, we were able to reconstruct the landscape of the surface of the moon. This will allow scientists to understand better the formation of the moon, and many aspects of its existence without a protective atmosphere like the Earth. As another example, our staff members are able to classify all the documents in the Wikipedia into different categories; and they are far less than the number of categories that you can find in Wikipedia. This is because Wikipedia allows the creator of a document to nominate what categories that the document should belong and to create new categories where they do not exist. Such categorization of documents will enable us to search the Wikipedia for information much more conveniently. Our dream is to advance and promote IT that it becomes ubiquitous and permeate every aspects of our daily life. You too can participate in this dream. As members of Faculty, students, sponsors, and partners, we can strive for a brighter future for all of us. Professor Ah Chung Tsoi |
