A few days ago, three senior students forming a team from the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) of Macau University of Science and Technology won the 2nd place at the 2017 National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. They are Shi Mingqiang, Wei Haochen and Tao Junjie. They were supervised by Associate Prof. Cai Zhanchuan

The 2017 National Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling was organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM). The contest was founded in 1992, it now has become the largest and most influence contest in China. This year, over 110,000 students in 36,375 teams from 1,418 institutions of 32 provinces, cities, and regions (including Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan), Singapore and Australia, participated the contest. The contest topic for this year is “Parameters Calibration on CT System” and “Pricing in ‘Making money through taking pictures’

The contest aims to stimulate interests of the undergraduates in studying mathematics and its applications, to improve the overall capacity in building mathematical models and applying computers to solve practical problems, to broaden students’ knowledge scope, and to foster innovation spirits and teamwork awareness.

The faculty of information and technology provides multiple learning opportunities for students. It had invited Prof. Xie Jinxing from Tsinghua University and Prof. Bian Fuping from Tianjin University, who are the experts of Mathematical Contest in Modeling, to give talks to students on mathematical modeling. During the contest, Prof. Liang Yong, Associate Prof. Cai Zhanchuan, Associate Prof. Ma Chao and Assistant Prof Li Huimin provided a lot of trainings and guidance to the team. In addition, this achievement is closely related to the Faculty focusing on the quality education, the support of the Student Affairs Office, the hard work of supervisors.
