Study Plan of Master of Science (Information Technology)

 

This program is designed for students to pursue their studies in the areas of information technology and computer science after receiving their first degree. The program puts emphasis on both theoretical and technical aspects. Students will be prepared for the positions for IT related R & D in enterprises, government organizations, or academic institutes and schools.

 

The objective of this postgraduate program is designed to:

1. Enhance students understanding of information technology theories;

2. Broaden students’ scope of professional knowledge;

3. Introduce to students the latest developments and research areas of information technology; and Supervise students in the writing of a successful thesis based on theories and practice.

 

Students may select their academic concentrations based on their research interest and their supervisors' areas of research. There are three majors in this program:

 

Computer and Information Systems

This major provides students with the training in the area of computer and information systems. Students are expected to acquire an in-depth understanding of computer architecture, principles of software engineering, database systems, and network and information security. This major will solidate their foundation for conducting research in computer and information systems.

 

Communication Engineering

This major provides students with the training in the area of communication engineering. Students are expected to acquire an in-depth understanding of modern communication systems, especially mobile communication systems, and design and analysis of communication systems. This major will solidate their foundation for conducting research in communication engineering.

 

Space Information Technology

Space information technology is a multidisciplinary major of information technology and space science. This major provides students with the training in the area of space information technology. Students are expected to acquire an in-depth understanding of methods for analyzing of space science data, and remote sensing.This major will solidate their foundation for conducting research in space information technology.

*Elective courses maybe cancelled if the number of enrolled students is below some threshold.

*Students are required to choose 3 elective courses to make up total of 9 credits.

*The Faculty will announce a list of elective course for students to choose in each semester.

 

1. Students are required to take 8 core courses and 3 elective courses credits, totally 33 credits during study period.

2. Complete an innovative thesis and pass the oral defense. Those students have completed 33 credits and passed the oral defense can apply the Master of Science (Information Technology) degree.

3.Students are required to take the examination for each course through finishing seminar report, test report, quiz or open-book/closed book exam.

 

Students will have a total of 24 months to complete the program. The maximum study period is 36 months for full-time students, and 48 months for local part-time students.

 

The student will be awarded the Master of Science (Information Technology) degree if he/she fully fills the following requirements and obtains the confirmation from the Senate of the University:

(1) Complete and meet the requirements prescribed in the study plan within the specific study period*;

(2) Abide by the regulations of the University;

(3) Clear all fees and charges and return all University property and equipment borrowed.

*Students admitted from the academic year 2017/2018 onwards are required to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (excluding thesis/dissertation) in order to graduate.
