Prof C.S. Lui Invited To Give A Talk

A Random Walk of Network Science Research: Sub-modularity, Large Graphs Computation and File System Support

Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology and Macau Institute of Smart City jointly held a seminar at Room 317, Block Non May 4th, 2017. Prof. John C.S. Lui was the invited speaker. Prof. Lui’s talk was on “A Random Walk of Network Science Research: Sub-modularity, Large Graphs Computation and File System Support”. Around 80 students and faculty members attended the seminar, including the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology Prof. Zhang Du and the Assistant Dean Prof. Li Jianqing.

Abstract:

In the first part of the talk, Prof. Lui provided some motivation of some network science research problems, in particular, he talked about how one can combine theory of sub-modularity and probabilistic counting data structures to information discovery and computation on large graphs. He also discussed how one should re-design the file system support so as to provide a more efficient computation on network science problems.  In the second part of his talk, he briefly went over his other research efforts, as well as his personal philosophy on teaching & administration.

Biography:

John C.S. Lui is currently the Choh-Ming Li Chair Professor of CSE and the Associate Dean of Research in the College of Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA.  After his graduation, he joined the IBM Almaden Research Laboratory/San Jose Laboratory. He later joined CUHK.  His current research interests are in network sciences with large data & traffic implications (e.g., online social networks, geo-distributed data center networks), machine learning on large data analytics, network/system security, network economics, large scale distributed systems and performance evaluation theory.  John is a consultant and advisor in various industrial R&D labs, as well as serving in various ACM and IEEE editorial boards and award committee.  He served as the chairman of the CSE Department from 2005-2011. He also received various departmental teaching awards and the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award, as well as the CUHK Faculty of Engineering Research Excellence Award. He is a Fellow of ACM, Fellow of IEEE, Senior Research Fellow of the Croucher Foundation and was the past chair of the ACM SIGMETRICS (2011-2015). His personal interests include films and general reading.
