MUST Great Master Seminars Series: Academician Ou Yang Zi Yuan Talked about Lunar Exploration

Sponsored by Macao Foundation, Session Ten of “MUST Great Seminars Series XVII” was held in the auditorium of Block D on Nov. 19th. Professor Ou Yang Zi Yuan, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences specializing in astrochemistry and geochemistry,presented a speech on “Face The Challenge: Chinese Lunar Exploration”.

The lecture was mainly about the establishment, development and current situation of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. Prof. Ou Yang introduced the preparation for China entering the age of space. Having started to study and analyze the extraterrestrial materials (meteorite) since the middle of the 20th century, space scientists, led by Prof. Ou Yang, not only established astrolithology and astrochemistry, but also formed a team of competent researchers.

Later, Prof. Ou Yang especially emphasized on the development of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, including the argumentation of the theories, the proposal of the three main operational phases –“Orbital Missions”, “Soft Landers” and “Sample Return”, the confirmation of the program objective and the configuration of effective load, etc. Finally, taking the achievement of Change 1 and Change 2, as well as the development of three operational phrases as examples, Prof. Ou Yang looked forward to the future of Chinese Lunar Science and the prospect of lunar exploration. He also admitted our technical limitation after comparing it with“Rosetta”, the most advanced robotic space probe now in the world.
