M.U.S.T. Faculty of Chinese Medicine Visited Southwest Medical University The Two Universities Exchanged Views on Academic Research and Training of Graduate Students

For the purpose of furthering the exchange and outreach of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine and enhancing the quality of the Faculty’s training of graduate students, Vice Dean Zhou Hua of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine headed a delegation of ten people including Associate Prof. Leung Lai Han, Associate Prof. Wong Kam Wai, and Associate Prof. Li Ting from the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines (M.U.S.T.) and paid a visit to Southwest Medical University, Luzhou, Sichuan, from July 13 to 16, 2016; the delegation was warmly welcomed and received by Party Secretary Liao Bin, President He Yan Zheng, Vice President Fan Jun Ming, Dean Fan Xian Ming of the School of Graduate Studies, and other principals of the Southwest Medical University. The two universities engaged in in-depth and extensive exchanges with regard to academic research, training of graduate students, and other topics of common interest, making possible opportunities for the two universities to engage in more effective cooperation in the future, as well as conditions for Faculty of Chinese Medicine, M.U.S.T. to continuously advance excellent quality education in training graduate students.

During the visit, the two universities successfully held the “2016 Joint Forum of Chinese Medicine and Bio-Medicine by Southwest Medical University and Macau University of Science and Technology”; graduate supervisors of the two universities and more than ten graduate students who were jointly trained by the two universities participated in the Forum. At the Forum, President He Yan Zheng and Vice Dean Zhou Hua respectively introduced the general basics of the Southwest Medical University and the Macau University of Science and Technology. Ten of the two universities’ researchers then gave presentations of their academic research: Prof. Pan Jun Ming based his studies on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)theories and shared his experience and insights in treating chronic kidney diseases with TCM in clinics; Prof. Zhou Hua took the case of sinomenine and discussed the pharmacological effects and mechanism of this chemical compound in treating rheumatoid arthritis; Prof. Wang Qin introduced the research progress of engineered P450 enzymes, its oxidation and metabolic pathway, and other similar natural products; Assistant Prof. Law Yuen Kwan introduced the research findings of applying TCM in intervening in autophagy when treating neurodegenerative diseases; Prof. Wang Qiong took aerospace medicine as a starting point and presented an analysis of cases where several new inventions and TCM were used in aerospace medicine; Assistant Prof. Xie Ying discussed the significance of reversing multidrug resistance in treating drug-resisting tumors, and the intervening effects and TCM targeted therapy; Prof. Xu Yong centered around the development mechanism of diabetic kidney diseases and argued from multiple perspectives the possible target points of clinics and basic research; Assistant Prof. Wu Jian Lin took endogenous micro molecules as research objects, adopted LC, MS, NMR, and other techniques and established relevant examination platforms to be used in metabolomic and proteomic research; Prof. Chen Yue presented studies regarding PET/CT diagnosis of thyroid diseases; Assistant Prof. Zhu Xiao Ming shared the application of nano-materials in biomedicine. The presentations covered both the fundamentals and the cutting-edge topics and extended to multiple research fields; researchers of the two universities exchanged ideas on the presentations and the possible research areas and directions for cooperation between the two universities; the Forum was said to have achieved its expected outcomes.

During the Forum, Assistant Dean Zhou Hua briefly introduced the graduate programs and requirements of graduate education of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine, M.U.S.T., and a year-2015 doctorate student of M.U.S.T. majoring in integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, who was originally from Southwest Medical University, reported his studies, current research engagements and research plans at M.U.S.T., and the two universities’ researchers gave critiques and exchanged opinions on his report.

Southwest Medical University kindly arranged the M.U.S.T. delegation on a tour of the affiliated Chinese Medicine Hospital, the Institute of Cardiovasology, the Basic Medical Research Center, the Research Center of Drugs and Functional Food, and the School of Pharmacology, Southwest Medical University, and the delegation was warmly received by the principals of the relevant units.

Other M.U.S.T. staffs that went on the visit include Assistant Prof. Law Yuen Kwan, Assistant Prof. Luo Pei, Assistant Prof. Wu Jian Lin, Assistant Prof. Xie Ying, Assistant Prof. Xu You Hua, and Assistant Prof. Zhu Xiao Ming.
