The British Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh recognizes the Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences of M.U.S.T. as a comprehensive Authorized Skills Development Center

President Michael Lavelle-Jones Awards the Qualification to Vice President Tong Ka Lok

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh awarded the Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), for the recognition as a comprehensive skill development training center. It is the first time that Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has awarded such recognized qualification in the Greater China. A ceremony to grant the qualification held at 11:30am on Monday, 19 September 2016 in Room A501 at Macau University of Science and Technology. Distinguished guests included: Mr. King Wong – Vice Secretary General, Macao Foundation, Dr. Mario Evora – Medical Director of Hospital Conde S. Januário, Dr. Ma Hok Cheung - President of Kiang Wu Hospital, Mr. Michael Lavelle-Jones, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Prof Peter McCollum - Examinations Convener of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Prof. Nivritti Patil - Honorary Clinical Professor of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Tong Ka Lok – Vice President of Macau University of Science and Technology, Dr. Edward Lai – Vice President of University Hospital, Chair Prof. Christopher Lam – Vice Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences at Macau University of Science and Technology, Ms. Valencia Chang - Administrative Director of University Hospital, Dr. Billy Chan – Program Director of Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development, and other overseas guests from UK.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to nurturing healthcare professionals and promoting the development of local medical education. During the past few years, Faculty of Health Sciences has provided professional trainings to more than 3,000 local frontline healthcare professionals. The Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences of M.U.S.T. is equipped with world-class simulation facilities, including the first 3D Anatomage virtual dissection table in Asia, vascular interventional surgical training simulator, robotic surgery simulator and surgical skills training system, interactive computer-based maternity simulator, ultrasound training simulation system, arthroscopic knee endoscopic surgery simulator and other laparoscopic / endoscopic surgical simulation systems. Over the years, Faculty of Health Sciences has offered medical training courses in various areas of clinical skills. International renowned scholars and experts are invited to give lectures. By organizing a series of medical academic activities, Faculty of Health Sciences is able to establish a medical knowledge sharing platform for serving as a continuous self-improvement of the healthcare professionals, which allows them to learn the latest medical development and the skills. It includes intensive care medicine, cardiac surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, neurosurgery, radiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, anatomy, pre-hospital emergency and disaster management. In addition, we have academically chaired in both the Sino-Luso International Medical Forum and the Sino Asia Pacific Medical Forum each year on different topics. Through international educational and academic exchanges, Faculty of Health Sciences promotes the development of medical specialist training in the mainland of China, Macau and Portuguese-speaking countries in the medical field so as to improve the standard of healthcare and strengthen the knowledge of our native medical professionals.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh awarded the Center of Excellence for Professional Medical Development at the Faculty of Health Sciences of M.U.S.T. for the recognition as a comprehensive skill development training center. It is an acknowledgement of efforts done by the center and of its professional training standards, as well as an honor to the specialist medical skills training industry of Macau. In the future, the center will closely collaborate with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to provide more high-quality surgical training courses and continue to provide innovative medical education in Macau.
