M.U.S.T. appoints Feng Xiaogang, Yu Dong, Zhang Hanyu to help nurturing film industry talents

Mr. Feng Xiaogang, renowned film director from mainland China, Mr. Yu Dong, President and Chairman of the Board of Bona Film Group Limited, and Mr. Zhang Hanyu, renowned Chinese actor attended the “Film Masterclass” series, which was organized by the Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology. Sponsored by the Macao Foundation, the event took place in the afternoon of December 13, 2016 at the hall N101 at M.U.S.T.; near five hundred teachers and students gathered at the occasion, the class was stimulating and enthusiastically received by the audience.

Before the class started, Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chancellor of M.U.S.T., presented appointment letters to the three renowned figures from film industry; Mr. Feng Xiaogang was appointed as Distinguished Guest Professor, Mr. Yu Dong as Guest Professor and Mr. Zhang Hanyu as Senior Instructor (Film Arts). With them joining the Macau Academy of Cinematic Arts of Faculty of Humanities and Arts at M.U.S.T. will encourage program set-up and boost the development of the film industry, and make contributions to nurture talents for Macau’s film industry.

During the class, the audience enjoyed a close-distance discussion with the three renowned film teachers; and the three teachers addressed the questions raised by the students one by one, which greatly impressed the audience. Mr. Feng said he was very happy to come to M.U.S.T. and share his views and experience with the students who are interested in cinematic arts. He mentioned that he would use shooting techniques such as framing the composition of shots to increase the absurdity of films. Mr. Feng also mentioned that this meeting would be a beginning, and he believes he will have more and deeper exchange with M.U.S.T. teachers and students in the future. Mr. Yu mentioned, in recent years, main-theme films in mainland China somehow derailed from the tastes and preferences of the current audience, and in order to change the unfavorable situation, the Bona Film Group Limited has begun to make new attempts to pursue new shooting techniques in making main-theme movies. Mr. Zhang shared his experience and thoughts on his acting career; he said he would like to try to switch his acting style and take up more antagonist roles in the next stage of his acting work.

Guests who attended the event were Mr. Wang Yi, Vice President of the Bona Film Group Limited, Dr. Tong Ka Lok, Vice President of M.U.S.T., Professor Zhang Zhiqing, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts, and Dr. Chiang Siu Ling Samantha, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts.

Mr. Feng Xiaogang is a renowned mainland Chinese film director, screenwriter, and actor. Some of his masterpiece works are Assembly, The Dream Factory, A World Without Thieves, Aftershock, If You Are the One, Back to 1942, Mr. Six, amongst others. He has won numerous film awards, including the Golden Shell award at the 64th San Sebastián International Film Festival, Best Director at the 31st Popular Movie Hundred Flowers Award, Best Director at the 27th China Golden Rooster Film Award, Excellent Director at the 15th China Huabiao Film Awards, Director of the Year at the 4th China Film Directors’ Guild, Best Actor at the 52nd Taiwan Golden Horse Film Awards, Best Director at the 15th Beijing College Student Film Festival, Best Director at the 24th Pyongyang International Film Festival, Best Director at the 22nd Shanghai Film Critics Awards, France Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and many others.

Mr. Yu Dong is founder of the Bona Film Group Limited, Chairman of the board and President of Bona, and renowned film producer; he received his PhD. from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. He has produced over 200 films, including From Vegas to Macau I, II, and III, The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, Operation Mekong, The Grandmaster, The Taking of Tiger Mountain and A Simple Life.

Mr. Zhang Hanyu is renowned mainland Chinese actor and voiceover actor. Some of his representative works include The Taking of Tiger Mountain, Assembly, The Message, Operation Mekong, The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel, Back to 1942, All Men Are Brothers, etc. He has won different film awards, including Best Actor at the 29th Popular Movie Hundred Flowers Award, Best Actor at the 45th Taiwan Golden Horse Film Awards, Excellent Male Actor Awards at the 13th China Huabiao Film Awards, Best Male Leading Role at the 30th China Golden Rooster Film Award, Best Male Leading Role at the 12th Chinese American Film Festival.
