Macau University of Science and Technology ushers in its 17th anniversary, a ceremony was held in the afternoon of 28 February to launch the celebration and unveils a series of activities that will take place during the anniversary month. Chairman Zhou Li Gao of the University Council of M.U.S.T., President Liu Liang of M.U.S.T., Vice President Pang Su Seng, Lecturer Feng Yan of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management represents teaching staff, Mr. Lao Chak Kuong, Deputy General Manager of Bank of China (Macau branch) represents alumni, Zhang He, Chairman of the Postgraduate Association, and Xie Dailiangzi, Chairman of the Students’ Union, both represent students, gathered at “MUST LIKE” to officiate the ceremony. The university faculty and students jointly witnessed the memorable moment at “MUST LIKE”; a festive atmosphere embraces the entire ceremony.
President Liu Liang addressed the ceremony; he noted that M.U.S.T. has been recognized as the youngest university among the Top 100 Universities across the two straits, Hong Kong and Macau. At the “2016 Ranking of Top Universities in Greater China”, jointly released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Rankings, M.U.S.T. was ranked 32nd, which has laid down a solid foundation for the University to become a renowned university in the Asia-Pacific region. Such advancements and developments would not have happened if it were not for the tremendous support provided by the Central People’s Government, the Macao S.A.R. Government, the M.U.S.T. Foundation, the University Council, and the University Advisory Committee, and the collective efforts made by the university faculty, administrative staff, and students.

In 2016, the University has made new progresses and developments in fostering talents, academic research, social services, and other respects. The University continued bringing in a number of excellent principal leaders of different fields and new teachers, including the first-time ever appointment of a Nobel Prize winner and fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, to join the University’s faculty team and research team, which has greatly enhanced the University’s management team and research force. The University responded closely and swiftly to the emerging demands of Macau society and economy for further development, and has opened several new undergraduate and graduate programs, which has further optimized the University’s program structure and improved the University’s educational standards. M.U.S.T. also made exponential efforts in furthering academic research, and the output of academic papers and patents has reached new historic height. In addition, the University set up the “Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory of Chinese Medicine” under the direction of Nobel laureate Dr. Neher, and the Macau Smart City Institute, which has greatly expanded the educational and research reaches of the University. The University continued performing well in student admission, and the source of students and the quality of the admitted students had significant improvement; a great number of young students of the University attained not only impressive academic records but also prizes and awards from various competitions; the University made proactive efforts in the campaigning of gearing research achievements to serving the development of Macau’s society and economy, which has led to the commercialization of a number of patents.
March of 2017 marks the “anniversary-celebration month” of the University for its 17th birthday; it is also a critical moment for the University to summarize its past so as to inform its future, and to launch new initiatives while carrying on with existing achievements; it is hoped that the entire University faculty and students could make further efforts and reach new heights, carry on in delivering the University’s motto of “dedication to practical studies, and enhancement of knowledge, ability and quality”, act on the University’s mission, “to promote cultural exchange, nurture intellectual growth, foster economic development, and further societal progress”, fully seize three key factors: “quality”, “innovation”, and “effectiveness”, make proactive efforts in fulfilling the policy of attaching equal importance to teaching and research, prioritize the development of excellent quality education and extraordinary research, multiply efforts in furthering the University’s internationalization, foster excellent talents, who cater to the demands of Macau’s harmonious stabilization and adequate diversity and sustainable development of economy, to love our country, to love Macau, and possess innovative spirit and applied capabilities, and eventually enable the University to stride a big step toward becoming a renowned university in Asia-Pacific.
