Director of State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences

Addressing the needs of team strength building and research advancement, Macau University of Science and Technology sincerely invites applications for the position of Director for the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences (SKL-LPS).

SKL-LPS was founded in 2018 with approval by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. It is the first State Key Laboratory in the field of astronomy and planetary sciences in China. Research direction of the Laboratory has been designed in close alignment with China’s strategic plan on deep space exploration. It has been participating in the country’s space exploration programmes for the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and the Jovian system. The Laboratory is positioned to be a scientific support platform for China’s outer space exploration, which also aims to build an important channel for scientific exchange between the East and West. As the only state key laboratory with planetary science as its focus, SKL-LPS is at the forefront of research in this field. Significant breakthroughs have been made in studies of internal structure, evolution, geology, surface transformations of planets and asteroids, planetary atmospheres, and space environments. Currently the research team of SKL-LPS has more than 90 members including specialists, scholars and research fellows. The group is distinctive in its multidisciplinary background, broad research experience, and international connection. Members come from first-class academic and research institutions throughout China as well as around the world.

I. Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a field relevant to lunar and planetary research.
  • Full professorship in a field closely related to planetary research.
  • Internationally recognized leader in a related discipline, e.g. planetary science, earth science, geology, physics or applied mathematics.
  • Renowned academic excellence with worldwide influence and in China; a professional role model.
  • Possessing global vision and strategic awareness.
  • Proven ability in organizing and managing research projects.
  • Strong management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both Mandarin and English, ability to use English as working language is preferred.

II. Responsibilities

  • Fully responsible for the development planning and implementation of the Laboratory.
  • Planning development of the Laboratory and carrying out the implementation.
  • Taking charge of the administration and daily operation of the Laboratory.
  • Leading the Laboratory in team building, carrying out the designated national research projects, and producing high-quality, innovative outcomes.
  • Overseeing progress in the Laboratory’s research undertakings, advocating cross-fertilization among disciplines, organizing academic exchange and promoting the reputation of the Laboratory.
  • Performing specific research and teaching duties.
