Macau University of Science and Technology Holds the 8th
International Conference on Computational Visual Media

At 9:00 AM on September 3, 2020, the 8th International Conference on Computational Visual Media (CVM 2020) was held at the Macau University of Science and Technology. As the epidemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has not been effectively controlled globally, the organizing committee of CVM 2020 decided to hold an online conference and conduct offline venues at the Macau University of Science and Technology and the Tsinghua University at the same time. Although the conference is chiefly held online, the participants from domestic and overseas are still enthusiastically communicating and learning about the-state-of-the-art computational visual media technologies via the Internet and cloud-based systems. In fact, the conference attracts more than 20 leading scholars in computer graphics, computer vision, and media computing, as well as more than 7,000 participants from universities, research institutions, and companies from domestic and overseas. They engage in the discussion about the latest research trends and development in the field of computational visual media.

The 8th International Conference on Computational Visual Media is organized by the Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology, and is sponsored and supported by the Research Grant of Macau University of Science and Technology (No. FRG-19-050-FI), the Macau Science and Technology Development Fund, the National Nature Science Foundation of China Innovation Group Project, and the Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology. The conference begins on September 3, 2020 and will hold online for three days. The Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology, Prof. Du Zhang, serves as the honorary conference chair, Prof. Hon-Cheng Wong serves as the conference co-chairs, Prof. Zhanchuan Cai serves as the organizing chair, Prof. Shimin Hu from the Tsinghua University serves as the publication chair, and Assistant Prof. Ping Li serves as the publicity chair. The conference mainly focuses on computational visual media (computer vision, machine learning, image processing, video processing, computer graphics) for communication and discussion and to seek innovation and breakthroughs in industry. The meeting agenda includes three keynote reports, 37 conference reports, and 12 sessions in total. Specifically, the three invited keynote speakers are Prof. Gordon Wetzstein from the Stanford University, Prof. Christian Theobalt from the MPI of Germany, and Dr. Ruizhen Hu from the Shenzhen University. These three invited speakers of the conference have high academic attainment in the field of computational visual media. Prof. Gordon Wetzstein was a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the Sloan Fellowship Fellowship, the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award. Prof. Christian Theobalt received several awards, including the EUROGRAPHICS Young Researcher Award, the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max-Planck Society, the German Pattern Recognition Award, and the Karl Heinz Beckurts Award. Dr. Ruizhen Hu received the Asia Graphics “Young Researcher Award”, the Young Scholar Award on Geometric Design and Computing from the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and the Asia Graphics Young Scholar Award.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology, Prof. Du Zhang, gave a warm speech at the opening ceremony, extended a warm welcome to the guests, and wished the 8th International Conference on Visual Media Computing a grand success. In the speech, Prof. Du Zhang said that the Macau University of Science and Technology is a young university that has always attached great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. The conference organized by the Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology aims to provide the platform of academic exchanges, mutual learning, and mutual progress for experts and scholars from domestic and overseas, who jointly promote the development of academic research in the field of visual media computing. After the opening ceremony, Prof. Gordon Wetzstein gave a theme report entitled "Towards Neural Imaging & Display", that won high praise from experts and scholars participating in the meeting.

The Computational Visual Media conference series, that founded by the Graphics Laboratory of Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2012, is one of the three series of conferences under the ASIA Graphics Association. The conference series mainly covers the fields of computer graphics, computer vision, machine learning, image processing, video processing, visualization, and geometric computing. Before this conference, the Computational Visual Media conferences were successfully held in Hangzhou, Beijing, Cardiff (UK), Tianjin, Shanghai, Bath (UK), and other places, all of which have achieved great international influence.

The 8th International Conference on Computational Visual Media coincides with the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Macau University of Science and Technology. The Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology holds the conference as one of the important celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the university and hopes to use the platform of the 8th International Conference on Computational Visual Media to seek new opportunities for cooperation and development with universities, research institutions, and enterprises from domestic and overseas. Thus, we can jointly promote the new development of the computational visual media industry.
