On September 30, 2021, the Faculty of Information Technology (FI) held IT Frontiers 2021 (The 5th FI PhD Student Seminar 2021) online due to the COVID-19. IT Frontiers 2021 provides an academic exchange platform for FI PhD students at the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.). Following the form of international academic conferences, the seminar promotes academic exchanges among students and teachers, enhances students' ability of sharing their findings in academic conferences and lay a solid foundation for their future participation in international academic exchanges. More than 45 PhD students and Professors (including FI dean, Prof. Du Zhang, and the program chair, Prof. Qinglin Zhao) attended this seminar.

At the beginning of the seminar, FI dean, Prof. Du Zhang delivered a speech. In his speech, he affirmed the efforts of the PhDs in the past year and hoped that everyone will continue to maintain a good momentum and make further breakthroughs in the second year of their researches. In addition, the dean also mentioned that IT Frontiers, as a platform for thought exchange and academic dissemination, provides good support for everyone's academic research. Finally, he thanked FI staffs for their efforts in arranging the seminar. Then the seminar was officially started. 29 PhD students enrolled in 2020 presented their research findings and shared their research outcomes under the guidance of their supervisors.
After the seminar, professors discussed and commented on reports of all the PhD students. According to reviewing results, PhD student Qingshuo Zhang won the Best Paper Award for his paper " Distance Metric Learning with Local Multiple Kernel Embedding". Jianlan Guo won the Best Innovation Award for her paper " Decentralized Privacy-Preserving Recommendation System Based on Matrix Factorization". Yuyun Chen won the Best Presenter Award for his paper " EDUENet: A Novel Method to Improve the Recognition of Mild COVID-19 CT Images". Three students (Jincheng Cai, Haoxu Shi and Liangyu Lin) won the Best Service Award. And three students (Hong Liang, Guangcheng Li and Shumin Yao) won the Best Support Award.
The successful holding of this seminar has exercised the comprehensive scientific research capabilities of FI PhD students, improved the academic atmosphere of the college, and reflected the spirits of perspectiveness and innovation and the mission of elite development that M.U.S.T. has always upheld.
