Two Research Teams Won Third Prizes in Technology Invention of 2108 Macao Science and Technology Awards

The Review meeting of the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards was held in Macau on June 25-26th. The two research teams of Faculty of Information Technology won  third prizes in technology invention. They are Prof. Li Jianqing’s research team working on  “High-Precision Low-Cost Optical Fiber Sensing Key Technology and Application” and Prof. Cai Zhanchuan’s research team working on “Key Techniques in Visual Media Computing”.

After the formal examination early this year, there were 44 applications entered to the peer expert review stage. The office of science and technology award of the Ministry of Science and Technology, China provided the expert list, there are 167 experts who reviewed the applications. The 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards in total awarded 7 prizes in Natural Science category, including 3 second prizes and 4 third prizes; 6 prizes in Technology Invention category, including 3 second prizes and 3 third prizes; and 3 prizes in Science and Technology Progress category, including 2 second prizes and 1 third prize.

In the project of “High-Precision Low-Cost Optical Fiber Sensing Key Technology and Application,” Assistant Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Li Jianqing and his team focused on the three requirements for high-precision optical fiber sensing (high energy and wavelength stability of optical sources, high sensitivity of fiber sensors and low cost of signal demodulation), and developed several new ultra-high sensitivity optical fiber sensors and sensor systems. Through technical inventions and innovations, the team has accomplished a great deal, including 3 U.S. patents, 2 Chinese invention patents, 5 Australian innovative patents, independent intellectual property rights and more than 10 SCI publications.

The Project of “Key Techniques in Visual Media Computing” was completed by Prof. Cai Zhanchuan and his research team: Lan Ting, Cao Wei, and Ye Ben. They carried on research work in the visual media information reconstruction, protection, display, identification, and analysis. The new techniques were proposed in this project for efficient reconstruction and orthogonal representation, coding and content security, automatic image stitching (including Chang’e-3 image stitching), and scientific data computing and visual analysis (including lunar data) of visual media pushed forward the development and progress of visual media technology. The project more than 10 US and Australian patents, and more than 20 high-quality.

The awards reflect the recognition and encouragement by the Macao S.A.R. Government and the Macao society in general for Faculty of Information Technology’s pursuit in scientific  research and technology innovations. Faculty of Information Technology will continue its research excellence and contribute to the demands of the Macau society. Through  “innovation, multi-disciplinary integration, and collaboration,” the Faculty is ready to further lift its scientific research and technologicalinnovations  to  the next level.
