Students of Faculty of Information Technology, Macau University of Science and Technology, Wang Jiyang, He Yaoyue and Liu Wenjie won 2nd prize at the 2018 China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. A total of over 120,000 students, belonging to 42,128 teams, from 1,449 universities in 33 provinces/cities/regions of China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), the U.S., and Singapore, participated in the 2018 competition. To help the students prepare for the competition better, the Faculty of Information Technology set up an advisor team of modeling to provide training sessions, talks, and advice to the university students.

The annual China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling is organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. It aims to stimulate students’ interests in learning mathematics, and to improve students’ overall abilities in mathematical modeling and techniques of using computer to solve real world problems. The Contest requires students to work in teams of three (undergraduates), and to complete the necessary modeling, solutions, validating, and paper-writing for specified problems within three days. The competition demonstrates not only the students’ abilities in analyzing problems and seeking solutions, but also their team work spirit. The Contest has become the largest-scale basic disciplinary-based competition in China, and it’s also the largest-scale mathematical modeling competition in the world.
