The Faculty of Information Technology Held an Online Academic Seminar

The Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology held an online academic seminar on July 28, 2021 (Zoom ID: 95785981417). We invited 3 professors to be the guest speakers of this seminar.

1. Speaker: Professor Lin Xiaodong, University of Guelph, Canada

Title: File Carving - Challenges and Research Directions

Abstract:

It is not unusual that we accidentally deleted an important file or lost files after a computer crash. Also, it is very often that criminals try to hide their wrongdoings by deleting digital evidences (e.g., downloaded illicit images or stolen confidential data or trade secret), which could indict them in the court. Therefore, it has been in high demand to recover deleted or lost files, which is the most common and widely used digital forensic investigation technique. In this talk, we will discuss technological advances in file recovery techniques. Specifically, we look at file carving techniques, which is the process of reconstructing files based solely on their contents. Also, we identify and discuss major challenges and research issues to be addressed in the development of file carving solutions. For example, privacy concerns may keep many people from assisting with an investigation or seeking professional assistance since they are afraid of embarrassment and humiliation, especially, when sensitive data are involved.

Title: Machine learning techniques in high-speed fiber optic communication systems

Abstract:

In order to meet the growing demand of network applications, the new generation of fiber optic communication system is developing toward ultra-high speed, high capacity and dynamic flexibility. With the development of artificial intelligence technology, machine learning technology is gradually applied to high-speed fiber optic communication systems due to its advantages of autonomous feature extraction and mapping, intelligent response, and less human intervention. This presentation will share the research progress of machine learning technology in the direction of optical performance monitoring and nonlinear equalization of digital coherent fiber optic communication systems and discuss the development trend of related technologies.

Title: Multi-objective holistic decision making for energy pile system design using ontology based multi-domain knowledge orchestration

Abstract:

Traditional way of designing energy pile system is mostly single domain / objective oriented, which lacks means to coherently consider different relevant factors across domains. The cost for life cycle design, construction and maintenance, return of investment, CO2 emission related sustainable requirements and so on also need to be considered in a systematic manner along with the main functional design objective for loading capacity and robustness. This talk presents a novel multi-objective holistic approach for energy pile system design using ontology based multi-domain knowledge orchestration, which can holistically provide the designers with across domain factors regarding financial, safety and environmental impact, for smart and holistic consideration during the early design stage. A prototypical ontology-based decision tool has been developed aiming at the holistic optimization for energy pile system by combining ontology and SWRL rules. A case study was conducted to illustrate the details on how to leverage knowledge query to provide a series of design alternatives autonomously through considering different design parameters. The method has demonstrated its practicability and scientific feasibility, it also shows the potential to be adopted and extended for other domains when dealing with multi-objective holistic design making.
