M.U.S.T. held the 2nd “Frontiers in Medicine Summit” -- Advances in Translational Medicine & Drug Development

The 2nd “Frontiers in Medicine Summit”Advances in Translational Medicine & Drug Development has successfully begun with grandeur today on 3rd April, 2023 at D Hall of the M.U.S.T. and broadcasted simultaneously online. The 2-day event is part of the celebration series for the University’s 23rd Anniversary and supported by eefit Technology Limited, Professional Health Trading Company Limited, Chin Pang Trading, and Mu Biotechnology (Guangzhou) Company Limited.

Welcome Speech by President of M.U.S.T. Joseph Hun-wei Lee

During the opening ceremony, Vice Chancellor and President of M.U.S.T. Joseph Hun-wei Lee mentioned that the summit is the first featured event organized by the Medical Science Division (MSD), which is an important research and education entity newly established in response to the rapidly changing demand for teaching, research, innovation, and service. The MSD is restructured from the original medical units and medical sciences disciplines, and now consist of the Faculty of Medicine and its affiliated School of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Chinese Medicine, as well as two establishing research centers including the AI laboratory in Medicine and Center of Regenerative Medicine, with the aim of facilitating talent cultivation and social development for the enhancement of the university’s global competitiveness and influence, and its integration into the strategic development of Big Health in Macao, the Greater Bay Area and China. He hoped that this summit would facilitate the MSD to give full play to its advantages and its continuous development in teaching, scientific research, and other aspects.

Prof. Erwin Neher gave the first Nobel Laureate lecture

This year’s Frontier in Medicine Summit is missioned to act as a modern medical research and educational platform dedicated to discussing the latest advancements in translational medicine and drug development with a wide range of topics, including infectious diseases epidemiology, vaccine development, oncology, Chinese medicine drug discovery, and diagnosis/drug screening platforms using advanced technology. At this summit, we were thrilled and honored to have two distinguished Nobel Prize Laureates as our keynote speakers. On the date of 3rd April, Prof. Erwin Neher, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1991, Director of the Membrane Biophysics Department, Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry Director of the Dr. Neher's Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery, Distinguished Professor and Honorary Doctorate of M.U.S.T. gave a speech entitled “Advances in cellular signaling and structural biology: New options for drug development and Cancer Research”. On the next day, Professor Peter Doherty, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1996, Laureate Professor, Patron of the Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne Michael F Tamer Chair of Biomedical Research, Department of immunology, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, Honorary Doctorate of M.U.S.T. will give a speech entitled “What’s next with pandemics and what should we do?”.

Other keynote speeches for today included “Development of live attenuated vaccines for SARS-CoV-2” by Prof. Dong-Yan Jin from the University of Hong Kong; “Potential Significance of Immunometabolism Regulation by Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Treatment of Depression” by Prof. Ling-Dong Kong from the State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Nanjing University (China); “Development of an automated multiplex diagnostic system for point-of-care applications” by Prof. Terence Lau from the Hong Kong Baptist University.

The coming sessions of speeches on 4th April will be given by Prof. Rui-Ping Xiao, Prof. Chuxia Deng, Prof. Kwok-Yuen Yuen, Prof. Yung-Chi Cheng, Prof. Ruowen Ge, and Prof. Youming Zhang.
