M.U.S.T. scholars receives Shanghai Magnolia Gold Award

On 29th September, Zhu Yizhun, the first Director and Chair Professor of the School of Pharmacy of Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), Distinguished Chair Professor and former Director of the School of Pharmacy of Fudan University, received the Magnolia Gold Award from the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Prof. Zhu was the only to be greeted and awarded by Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong.

Since becoming the first Director of the School of Pharmacy in March 2016, Professor Zhu Yizhun leads the research teams in Macao and Fudan to pioneer a series of new drug studies based on pharmacology and epigenetics. In December 2016, his Class I new drug, Leonurine (SCM-198), was transferred and started industrial production with 150 million RMB. The Phase I clinical research work in China is nearing completion and the Phase II clinical research is launched. This project has obtained two national Class I new drug clinical research approvals and will conduct as a first-in-class clinical research in the United States, being as one of the few representatives in China. The American Chemical Society journal C&EN (April 3, 2017) reports its successful experience in drug discovery and evaluates it as one of the pioneers of innovative drug research in China. Professor Zhu’s recent research papers HDAC4 regulates vascular inflammation via activation of autophagy (April, 2018) and Critical role of histone demethylase JMJD3 in the regulation of neointima formation following vascular injury (June, 2018) are published in the international top journal Cardiovasc Res. The journal editors respectively comment that the former paper opens up a new era in the world of biomedicine and the latter one reaches a new scientific breakthrough. Professor Zhu’s research work has become an important scientific case recognized by the international community for the cooperation between Shanghai and Macao.

Before joining M.U.S.T., Professor Zhu Yizhun was recruited by Fudan University as the Director of the School of Pharmacy in 2005. He was the first and only Distinguished Professor of Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education, and was the first scholar from School of Pharmacy, Fundan University, who won the first National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Apart for being the first national key new drug creation platform director of School of Pharmacy in Fudan, Professor Zhu is also titled as the Chief Scientist of National Basic Research Program (973), Shanghai Leading Figure, Shanghai Excellent Academic Leader, National Distinguished Overseas Chinese Award for Outstanding Innovation, Health China 2014 Top 10 People of the Year, and more. He was the chief editor of the 7th and 8th (the first edition of English version) editions of the national planning textbook Pharmacology, and the chief editor of China Pharmaceutical (first edition) published by People’s Medical Publishing House of the National Health and Family Planning Commission. Under Professor Zhu’s leading, the research teams have published more than 190 SCI papers (H index 45), applied for more than 30 international PCT, US and Chinese new drug invention patents with 18 of them authorized, and presided over 16 scientific research projects with a total funding of more than 160 million RMB. In September 2012, Professor Zhu was appraised as one of the most successful Chinese returnee scientists by the US journal Science (published on September 28, 2012) in reporting on the development of biomedicine in China.

Magnolia is reportedly the flower of Shanghai City, which symbolizes Shanghai’s spirit of vitality and daring to be the pioneer. The Magnolia Honor Award is the highest award set by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government to recognize foreign citizens who have made outstanding contributions to Shanghai’s economic construction, technological innovation, and social development. Since its beginning from 1993, it is awarded once a year, and more than 200 people have received the Award in 27 years. This year, the Shanghai International Awards Appraisal Joint Conference reviewed 12 winners and recommended them to the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government for approval.
