The pioneer biomedical technology training course organized by the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines of Macau University of Science and Technology was successfully completed on July 13, 2021.
The training course started on July 2, 2021, and was attended by 25 secondary school students from Pui Ching Middle School (Macau). The teachers of the course included Chair Prof. Zhu Yizhun, Dean of the School of Pharmacy of the Macau University of Science and Technology, Prof. Zhou Hua, Dean of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine, Prof. Elaine Lai-Han Leung, Executive Director of Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery, and several professors and technicians from the State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicines in Quality Research and Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery. At the opening ceremony, Chair Prof. Zhu Yizhun and Prof. Zhou Hua sent their best wishes to the students and wished them a fruitful training course.
After the opening ceremony, Chair Prof. Zhu Yizhun and Professor Zhou Hua gave lectures to the students, which sparked their interest in biomedical research. Associate Professor Elaine Lai-Han Leung led the students to visit the State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicines in Quality Research and Dr. Neher’s Biophysics Laboratory for Innovative Drug Discovery. After completing the safety training in the laboratory, the students started their one-week study and laboratory operation training. During the week, the students not only learned rich theoretical knowledge, listened to research stories from the front line of research, but also participated in classical experiments in various disciplines, including physiology, molecular biology, pharmacology and chemistry. The course content of the training class was compact, the teachers were responsible, and the students participated actively and made good progress.

Training Classes
Several teachers from Pui Ching Middle School, including Principal Gao Jinhui and Director Yang Peixin, attended the graduation ceremony. At the closing ceremony, Chair Prof. Zhu Yizhun presented certificates to the students and took photoes. The students and the teachers shared their experiences and feelings during the training course. The students treasured the opportunity to learn about scientific research for secondary school students, and they learned a lot from this training course. The teachers from the Macau University of Science and Technology shared some of the moments during the training and were impressed with the students' learning attitude. The teachers of Pui Ching Middle School appreciated the success of the training course, which provided a valuable learning opportunity for the students during the epidemic. Principal Gao Jinhui fully appreciated the success of the workshop, the attitude of the teachers and students, and the fact that such an attitude would be beneficial to the students in any future career. Principal Gao also encouraged the students to join the biomedical industry and to contribute to the future development of biomedicine and economic diversification in Macao. Finally, Chair Prof. Zhu Yizhun once again affirmed the efforts of the students and expressed her expectation that the seeds of biomedicine research planted in the hearts of the students during this training course would sprout and flourish in the years to come and grow into the pillars in the field of biomedicine.
