M.U.S.T. students win 1st Prize at national post-graduate mathematical modeling contest

Three doctoral students from the Faculty of Information Technology of Macau University of Science and Technology have won the 1st prize at the 14th “Huawei Cup” China Post-graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. The winning team was Ye Ben, Lan Ting and Chen Juanjuan, this was the first time M.U.S.T. students got 1st prize at the contest. In addition, Yuan Xixi, Huo Yanwen, and Wang Yutong, postgraduate students from the Faculty of Information Technology have won the 3rd prize at the same contest. Both of the teams were coached by Associate Professor Cai Zhanchuan.

This year, over 10,000 teams from 437 post-graduate institutions of 32 provinces, cities, and regions, including Hong Kong and Macao, participated the contest. As a result, the contest has made a great influence in the national postgraduate community.

The China Post-graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling has been one of the themed events of the “National Post-graduate Innovation and Practice Activities Series” organized by the Degree and Post-graduate Education Development Center of the Ministry of Education, which is an academic competition on applied research of mathematical modeling and opens to all currently enrolled postgraduates across the nation. The series aims to stimulate innovation and study interests of the postgraduate community, improve the overall capacity in building mathematical models and applying computers in solving real-life problems, broaden students’ knowledge span, foster innovation spirits and teamwork awareness, facilitate extraordinary talents of the postgraduate community to excel and achieve speedy growth, promote reform of graduate education, and enhance communication and cooperation between higher education institutions and the industry.

M.U.S.T. commits to the principle of attaching equal importance to teaching and research, cultivates a campus spirit of “harmonious perfection and continuous innovation”, makes active efforts in exploration of characteristic educational mode of graduate students, provides incentives and support for graduate students to take part in the “National Post-graduate Innovation and Practice Activities Series”, and in the meantime, makes available platforms for graduate students to pursue multi-dimensional learning and innovative practices. In recent years, students of the Faculty of Information Technology have been doing well in the China Post-graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and have won 13 national prizes (including one 1st prize, four 2nd prizes, and eight 3rd prizes).
