Message from the President

Jian-Kang Zhu
Chair Professor
Vice-Chancellor of MUST
President of MUST
Member of the US National Academy of Sciences

It is a great honor to be appointed as the fifth President of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) at this significant moment in the university's development. Here, I would like to extend my most sincere gratitude to the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the University Council, all faculty, staff, and students, as well as friends from all communities of the society who have long cared for and supported the development of MUST.
Since its establishment in 2000, MUST has grown into a multi-disciplinary university with the highest student enrollment in Macao through the joint efforts of the first four presidents and all faculty and students, achieving remarkable accomplishments in teaching, research, and social services. Upholding the university motto of "Dedication to Practical Studies, Enhancement of Knowledge, Ability and Quality", MUST is committed to cultivating high-quality talents who are patriotic, love Macao, possess international perspectives, and exhibit innovative capabilities. It has made active contributions to the successful practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Macao and to national development.
Standing at this new starting point, I am deeply aware of the significant responsibilities ahead. In the future, I will work together with all colleagues at the university to make continuous efforts in the following directions:
First, consolidate the distinctive features of the university and enhance the quality of education. We will improve the educational system and talent cultivation model, promote innovation in curriculum design and teaching methods, build an outstanding teaching team, and establish a sound learning support and assessment mechanism. This will provide students with a more comprehensive and higher-quality learning experience, cultivating high-quality talents with both international perspectives and a sense of social responsibility.
Second, strengthen scientific research and innovation to serve regional development. We will focus on cutting-edge technologies and societal needs, promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and the transformation of research outcomes, and facilitate the application of scientific achievements in areas such as health, environment, and technology. This will help support Macao's moderate economic diversification and enhance MUST's contributions to national strategies.
Third, expand international exchanges and deepen regional cooperation. We will further broaden our collaborative network with top-tier universities and research institutions both domestically and internationally, providing students with richer opportunities for international exchanges. At the same time, we will actively participate in higher education collaboration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, promote resource sharing and collaborative innovation, and enhance MUST's influence in the global higher education landscape.
Fourth, foster a diverse and inclusive campus culture. We will continue to uphold an open and inclusive campus atmosphere, respect the exchange and interaction among faculty and students from different cultural backgrounds, strengthen the holistic, whole-person development of students, and cultivate a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship. This will make the campus a fertile ground for the exchange of ideas and the spark of innovation.
The mission of the University is to illuminate virtue, to approach and serve the people, and to rest in the highest benevolence. I firmly believe that with the support of the Macao SAR Government and all sectors of society, and through the concerted efforts of all MUST members, MUST will achieve even greater excellence in advancing knowledge creation, talent cultivation, and social progress. It will contribute more wisdom and strength to Macao, the nation, and even the world.
I look forward to working hand in hand with everyone to write a new chapter for MUST.
