Preface
In essence, general education aims to prompt students to achieve all-round development so as to enable them to adapt to the evolving development of the time and meet with the demands of modern society. The contemporary society is in need of talents who are equipped with broad knowledge span, refined characters, humanistic spirits and scientific spirits. It is in view of such goals and requirements that M.U.S.T. set up its general education program, aiming to foster extraordinary high-quality competitive talents and contribute to advancement of Macao’s economy and society.
General education courses constitute an important link in the undergraduate curriculum of Macau University of Science and Technology for the purpose of fostering talents and improving students’ quality. Each undergraduate at M.U.S.T. must complete studies of a certain number of compulsory and elective general education subjects. In addition to the afore-mentioned compulsory subjects, general education electives cover a wide range of areas and fields of general education. Based on the different requirements by their own faculties/schools, students should select elective courses of certain categories to fulfill the required number of credits.
The general education electives of M.U.S.T. are comprised of three categories: the science and technology category, the social sciences and humanities category, and the liberal arts and languages category.
Within each of the three categories of general education elective courses, the University has given adequate support to invite renowned teachers to open various subjects. In addition to teachers of the University’s own and local elites of Macao, many lecturers for the electives are leading figures, renowned scholars, or famous experts at home and abroad in their own fields, some are even Changjiang Scholars distinguished professors, or even state-level renowned teachers for state-level classic courses in the Mainland. For example, the Great Master of Science and Technology Lecture Series within the natural sciences and modern technologies category generally invites academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Taiwan Academia Sinica and other equivalent-level top scientists in science and technology to be the speakers; the General Introduction to Political Studies within the humanities and social sciences category is taught by Prof. Yan Qiang, who is Director of the Public Affairs & Local Governance Research Center of Nanjing University, Professor of the School of Government of Nanjin University, and member and General Secretary for the Political Studies Program Advisory Committee of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education of China. The Chinese Tea Culture within the liberal art category is taught by Mr. Leong Iok Kei, Chairman of the Macao Tea Art Association. By offering a wide range of subjects pertaining to various categories, the University’s general education program hopes to make available a greater diversity of high-quality general education courses for the students of M.U.S.T.
This introduction here will introduce the subjects to be offered in each category. It is hoped that through this introduction students will be able to have a general understanding of the course curricular, course contents and teachers’ profiles of each general education category, so as to help students to select courses appropriate to their own situations and studies.
