Macao’s casino industry has been discussed from many different perspectives, but seldom has it received such a thorough architectural analysis as that shared with the FHTM community by Dr Francisco Vizeu Pinheiro, Senior consultant of the Municipal and Civic Affairs Institute of Macao, on 3 Novermber 2012.
About 70 staff and students sat riveted through a slide show of the development of the industry from the nineteen fifties to the heady years following licensing liberalization in 2002, and into future possible scenarios. The transformation of the physical landscape of Macao over the past decade is nothing short of breathtaking. On the positive side has been the construction of attractive and iconic world-class properties attracting thousands of tourists. On the negative side has been the sacrifice of land for public housing, community activities and green park areas. Dr Pinheiro envisions several scenarios for a more balanced development of the sector.
On behalf of the Dean, visiting professor Dr Cheng Soo May thanked Dr Pinheiro for his insightful sharing, with a MUST souvenir and flag.
