Inauguration Ceremony of “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” Successfully Held

To showcase the University's latest scientific research developments and achievements, the Inauguration Ceremony of the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” of Macau University of Science and Technology was successfully held on October 31, 2023. The “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center”, located in the Coloane Concórdia Industrial Park in Macao, is a collaboration between Macau University of Science and Technology and Liu’s Commerce and Industry Ltd. It is in line with the policy direction of the Macao SAR government to optimize industrial land and revitalize the development of the Coloane Parque Industrial da Concórdia. This includes the promotion of industrial upgrading and transformation, building a series of industrial R&D experimental and demonstration bases and innovation and technology centers, as well as an off-campus academic research center that integrates high-end manufacturing technology, research and development results, and the transformation of industry-university-research scientific research results to promote the moderately diversified development of Macao's economy.

The “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” represents M.U.S.T.'s most innovative industry-university-research platform. It has already housed scientific research teams from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine, together with the Key Laboratory of River Basin Digital Twinning of Ministry of Water Resources, and the Respiratory Disease AI Laboratory on Epidemic Intelligence and Medical Big Data Instrument Applications, and many other new scientific research platforms.

Joseph Hun-wei LEE, President of Macau University of Science and Technology Delivered a Speech

Joseph Hun-wei LEE, President of Macau University of Science and Technology, delivered a welcoming speech at the Inauguration Ceremony of the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center”. In his speech, he extended a warm welcome and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all guests on behalf of Macau University of Science and Technology for their strong support. President LEE said that the center is dedicated to providing scientists, engineers, and medical researchers with an exclusive research platform, creating a space for them to work together and solve important problems freely without departmental boundaries. President LEE emphasized that the MUST LIU Center provides a platform that promotes interdisciplinary research among scholars across the University, especially those from the Faculty of Innovation Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine, where they will work together to cultivate Macao’s innovative technological talents and open a new era of Macao’s economic diversification. The MUST LIU Center will actively play a unique role and contribute to the development of innovation and technology in the Greater Bay Area.

Academician Nanshan Zhong Delivered a Speech

Nanshan Zhong, Recipient of the Medal of the Republic, Director of Guangzhou Laboratory, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Honorary Doctorate of Macau University of Science and Technology, said in his speech that M.U.S.T. has successfully integrated technology, education, and talents to actively build exclusive scientific research platforms and promote cross-fertilization of ideas. The construction of an innovative environment will jointly contribute to the development of innovation in science and technology and the cultivation of high-quality talents. Academician Zhong expressed his hope that the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” would improve with more industry-university-research results being transferred into higher benefits.

President Weng Keong Che Delivered a Speech

Weng Keong Che, President of the Administrative Committee of the Macau Science and Technology Development Fund, said in his speech that he expected Macau University of Science and Technology would accumulate more scientific research results, cultivate more outstanding talents, better support the diversified development of Macao’s 1+4 industries, and further enhance Macao’s influence and competitiveness in the field of scientific research. At the same time, he also hoped that Macau University of Science and Technology would make full use of the talent introduction plan recently launched by the government and the various funding plans of the Science and Technology Fund to attract outstanding international talents, actively participate in "industry-university-research" cooperation, promote the transfer of scientific and technological benefits, and contribute to the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin by providing more support for sustainable development. President Weng Keong Che put forward five expectations for the development of the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center”: cultivating an innovation culture, promoting interdisciplinary cooperation, strengthening industry-university cooperation, providing resource support, and establishing an international exchange platform.

Subdirector Sio Hong Teng Delivered a Speech

Sio Hong Teng, Subdirector of the Education and Youth Development Bureau, emphasized that M.U.S.T. has gathered many professionals in the fields of computers, materials, medicine, and others, and has the potential to jointly explore and research cross-cutting cutting-edge technologies. At the same time, he has pointed out that the establishment of the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” would be conducive to strengthening interdisciplinary innovative research in the fields of computer science, materials science, engineering science, environmental science, and humanities and arts, and organically integrating the knowledge of academia with the needs of the industry. It will provide a major new technological and cooperation platform for the development of high-tech innovation industries in Macao and Macau University of Science and Technology. Finally, Subdirector Sio Hong Teng hoped that the MUST LIU Center could become an interdisciplinary cutting-edge science and technology research center for Macau University of Science and Technology and even the entire Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao region, and an important base for cultivating talents and promoting industrial development.

Subsequently, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on-site to mark the completion of the Inauguration Ceremony of the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center”. Unveiling ceremonies were also held for four other Macau University of Science and Technology research units, namely the Macau Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, the Respiratory Disease AI Laboratory on Epidemic Intelligence and Medical Big Data Instrument Applications, the Open Intelligent Electric Vehicles Research Center​, and the Innovation Research Center for Medical Robotics. Guests attending the unveiling ceremonies also included: Pui Kun Ung, Director of the Kiang Wu Hospital; Ligong Lu, Director of the Zhuhai People’s Hospital; Wang Cheng, CTO of the Zhuhai Hanglok-Tech Company, Limited; Tak Meng Choi, Chairman and CEO of Mtel - Telecommunication Company Limited; Vice-Presidents of Macau University of Science and Technology Tong Ka Lok, Paul Kwong Hang TAM, and Jiang Zhi Hong; Du Zhang, Dean of the School of Computer Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering; Kang Zhang, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; and Zifeng Yang, Director of the Respiratory Disease AI Laboratory on Epidemic Intelligence and Medical Big Data Instrument Applications.

Introducing the “Macau Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine"

The guests visited a series of scientific research achievement displays at the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center”, including the “Video of Auto-Driving Technologies”, “Introducing the Macau Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine”, “Introduction of Visual Platform for Forecasting and Early Warning of Epidemic Disease”, “Materials Science Industry-Academic-Research Achievements”, “Medical Surgical Robot”, and other laboratory equipment. There was substantial interest in the exhibits on display which fully demonstrated the University's latest scientific research developments and achievements, as well as an exclusive scientific research platform that provides a cross-innovation environment for researchers.

In the future, the “MUST LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center” will have more high-end scientific research and innovation teams stationed there to implement independent research and development core technology projects, cultivate more application-oriented scientific and technological innovation talents, and inject new impetus into those who intend to devote themselves to scientific and technological innovation and research and development. It provides sufficient practical opportunities for Macau University of Science and Technology to fulfill its mission of cultivating professionals to serve society, promoting scientific and technological innovation, and developing scientific and technological industries to meet the needs of Macao, the Greater Bay Area and the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, and of the country.
