Representative team from the Faculty of Law at Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) won the third prize in the National Environmental Resource Mock Court Competition for College Students

 From November 17th to November 19th, 2023, the representative team from the Faculty of Law at M.U.S.T. participated in the competition held at Tianjin University. The competition was jointly organized by the National 2011 Judicial Civilization Collaborative Innovation Center, the Chinese Environmental Protection Federation, the Environmental Resource Judicial Research Center of the Supreme People's Court, and Tianjin University. A total of 16 university representative teams, including those from M.U.S.T., Beihang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong University, Tianjin University, Wuhan University, and Northwest University of Political Science and Law, entered the finals.

The representative team from the Faculty of Law at M.U.S.T. was guided by Associate Professor Huang Mingjian, with Assistant Professor Xiao Huina serving as the coach during the preliminary stage. Ph.D. student Wang Anqian from the Faculty of Law also provided guidance. The official team members consisted of Sun Kerun, Su Xuesi, Jian Yueqi, Zhou Changqing, Yan Wenkai, and Mi Xuan, while the supporting team members included Zhu Xiaolin, Chen Yilin, Zhao Yunhan, Yang Tianqi, Li Minying, and Wu Xia. After intense competition, the representative team from the Faculty of Law at M.U.S.T. was awarded the "Third Prize" in the 2023 National Environmental Resource Mock Court Competition for College Students. Associate Professor Huang Mingjian received the "Outstanding Coach Award," and Yan Wenkai was honored with the "Outstanding Player Award."

The National Environmental Resource Mock Court Competition for College Students provides a platform for academic and practical exchanges in the field of environmental law among China's academic community, legal practitioners, and universities. The competition aims to help law students enhance their practical skills in environmental justice, strengthen the connection between theory and practice, and cultivate outstanding talents in environmental justice, environmental legal practice, and environmental legal academia. The competition topics include environmental civil litigation, environmental criminal litigation, and environmental criminal-related civil public interest litigation.

Through participating in this competition, the members of the Faculty of Law representative team have undergone comprehensive training and improvement of their abilities, showcasing the environmental legal literacy of M.U.S.T. students. In the future, students from the Faculty of Law at M.U.S.T. will uphold the motto of "Dedication to practical studies, enhancement of knowledge, ability and quality." They will devote themselves to strengthening their legal literacy, expanding their knowledge in the field of law, and strive to achieve even better results in future competitions.

Sun Kerun (Team Captain)

From carefully crafting the wording in the preliminary written submissions to engaging in fierce debates during the courtroom proceedings in the finals, from conducting foundational analyses of the right to relief to conducting legal research and examining case facts, we have undergone comprehensive training and discovered our own weaknesses and shortcomings throughout this process. In the future, we will learn from our experiences, work hand in hand, and strive for new heights, aiming for greater progress.

Su Xuesi:

This mock court competition is not only about applying knowledge, teamwork, communication, coordination, but also about the ability to stay calm and deal with challenges in a high-pressure environment. It is the essence of this journey. I hope that on the path of seeking knowledge and education, we will all "persevere and have a promising future."

Jian Yueqi:

"By practicing, one gains deeper knowledge, and with deeper knowledge, one achieves greater progress in practice." This competition has not only expanded my knowledge in the field but also sharpened my debating and expression skills. I want to thank my teammates. "When ten thousand people shoot arrows, they all hit the target." In this competition, we worked together, supported each other, and made progress together. I believe that this experience will become a valuable asset in my life.

Zhou Changqing:

This competition has deepened my understanding of environmental law, and the practice in the mock courtroom has also honed our teamwork and legal skills. This award is recognition of our relentless efforts and a driving force for further research in environmental law. In the future, we will continue to delve into legal studies and contribute more efforts to the development of the field of environmental law.

Yan Wenkai:

From analyzing the case before the trial, examining the evidence, polishing legal documents to engaging in real confrontations during the mock trial, every step has provided us with inspiration and gains. It is a valuable opportunity to combine the knowledge from books with the practical environment of litigation. Through this competition, I have come to understand that becoming a qualified legal professional requires long-term study and effort. I now have more confidence and courage to go further on this path.

Mi Xuan:

I am fortunate to participate in the Environmental Law Mock Court Competition, which has allowed me to have a deep understanding and experience of the trial process, appreciate the majesty of the law, and deepen my understanding of legal theories. This has a significant educational impact on our future learning and participation in legal work. Through participating in this mock court, I have personally experienced the sanctity of the law and realized that every word and action of mine is related to the tangible interests of the parties involved. The sense of responsibility and mission has surged. At the same time, it has allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, deepen my understanding of knowledge, and strengthen the concept of teamwork. It has been immensely beneficial.
