Sino-Luso International Medical Forum (Series 32)

International and local Macau healthcare providers are gathering for the 32nd Sino Luso International Medical Forum from 29th -31st of July 2016 in Macau, China.

Titled, “Advanced Medical Imaging Technologies and Clinical Skills” this forum brings together medical imaging experts to teach ultrasound basics as well as advanced medical imaging techniques.

Prof. Manson Fok, President of the Sino-Luso Forum, comments, “This meeting will be attended by many physicians and researchers. We will have excellent trainers from the UK, Australia, Portugal, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau. We believe this event will promote a greater exchange of opinions and ideas on medical imaging in Asia. It will also improve ties and friendship amongst our global medical community. Numerous events are scheduled, including presentations, special lectures, keynote speeches, workshops, simulation sessions and symposiums.”

Sino-Luso organizers are proud to acknowledge two excellent speakers from Taipei. One is a Pulmonary Disease expert from Taipei’s Veteran General Hospital, Dr Wu Mei-han . The second is a renowned radiologist from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Dr Liu Yuan-chang. They both have played vital roles in these advancements particularly in the treatment of lung cancer and heart diseases.

Another top presenter from Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dr. Ralph Cheung, comments, “I am excited to come over to Macau again, I remember around five years ago, the forum started the first medical sonography workshop and I was invited as a clinical trainer. It is very important to educate our junior colleagues, as in the future you will not be an emergency medicine or critical care doctor unless you can inspect, palpate, percuss, auscultate, ultrasound and cogitate. Sonography plays a very important part of all of these procedures. This time I will be putting a lot more emphasis into the subject of Point-of-care in ultrasound for Fluid Status Assessment in Emergency Departments.”

We are also proud to present a wonderful expert from the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Western Australia, Dr. Andrea Mould to present her paper named, “Clinical Studies in OBYGN Ultrasound contributing to Building a Database of Cases.” For Immediate Release

Comments Dr. Billy Chan, the Vice President of Forum, “Close to a quarter of million women in the US diagnosed with breast cancer per annum and over 40,000 of them will die of this, according to the US National Cancer Institute. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with some form of breast disease at some point in their lives. For this forum we will invite an expert from Hong Kong, Dr. Julian Fong to speak about an interesting topic in ‘Advancement in Breast Cancer Screening - Practical Use of Tomosynthesis’.”

An expert in breast screening in this region, Dr. Julian Fong, notes, “Mammograms save lives by finding cancers that can be cured if detected in an early stage. In this Pearl River Delta region for instance, we advise the public and draw their attention about early detection, intervention, and information about postoperative treatment. All in all, what we are trying to do is to lower breast cancer mortality.”

Special Guests to attend this important medical imaging forum included overseas experts in simulation training, such as Dr. Ross Horley from the Notre Dame University, Australia.

Other presenters include the president of Macau Cardiology Association, Dr. Mario Evora, Dr. Chris Wong, the past president of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology. Prof. Kim Khaw, an honorary senior medical officer from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Council Member of Macau Society of Emergency and Critical Care, Dr. Chang Tam-fei.

During the scientific symposium on Saturday 30th July, we will be awarding some of our best trainees from our medical sonography certificate courses held by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). These trainees obtain a great pleasure from simulation to live ultrasound scanning. They are responsible, and this award will be of essential importance for them in future. They can serve as an example to many of our Macau trainees. They demonstrate essential academic success and can be awarded to their "professional" (meaning learning) and skills qualities.

This award ceremony will be held at the Dr. Stanley Ho Medical Development Foundation on the 9th Floor Landmark ICBC Building, 30/7 from 2:00 - 6:30 pm.

Dr Manson Fok concludes, “We wish you all a very exciting stay in Macau and we are proud to provide this unique platform for everyone to acquire vital knowledge on the newest advancements of medical imaging technologies.”
