Medical education can be found in many places around the world, and some enjoy high reputation in the field. One of the world’s leading medical universities is Karolinska Institutet (KI) established in 1810 and situated in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. Among the numerous outstanding achievements in medical field, KI stands out with two facts: it offers the broadest range of quality education in medicine and healthcare sciences in the country, while it ranks at the second top institution in medical research in Europe (Oxford University at the first top). Another well-known function is that KI is home for the selection of Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine since 1901 through its Nobel Assembly Room.

Invited by Prof. Lars Klareskog, Director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and former Chair of the Nobel Laureate Selection Committee for Physiology or Medicine at KI, a delegation of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) leading by Chair Prof. Liang Liu, President of MUST, accompanied by Prof. Jian-Rong Sun, Associate Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. Elaine Lai-Han Leung, Assistant Dean of Macau Institute of Drug and Applied Health, and Visiting Prof. Shui-Ping Jiang, paid a visit to KI on April 10, 2015. The delegation was warmly received by Prof. Hans-Gustaf Ljunggren, Dean of Research in KI and Prof. Klareskog on behalf of KI. Prof. Ljunggren introduced the entire profiling of KI in research and education and expressed strong interest for developing more collaborations with China and Macao, especially in the areas of innovative drug discovery and translational research. In order to identify the niche areas of collaboration between KI and MUST, a half-day seminar was held with seven presentations by the senior people in administration and academic research in KI including Prof. Schalling on international cooperation, Prof. R. Harris on postgraduate studies, Prof. H. Harris on experimental rheumatology, Prof. Stahle on dermatology, Prof. Vollenhoven on clinical trials of drugs, Prof. Ehrenborg on cardiovascular diseases therapy, and Prof. Back on the study of atherosclerosis. During the seminar, profound discussions were conducted. Chair Prof. Liu and Prof. Klareskog both expressed high interest in furthering institutional collaboration through identification of research projects where both institutions could contribute, and further discussions will be done while Prof. Klareskog visits MUST in August this year.

During the visit in KI, the MUST delegation was invited to visit the Nobel Assembly Room where discussions are held among the Nobel Laureate Selection Committee members behind closed doors, and the final selection of the winning Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine is announced each October. This close tie between the Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine and KI makes KI a “powerhouse” for its quality research through close collaborations with the best researchers from around the world.
