MUST Co-organized Boao Asia Development Forum Eight Hundred Elites from Government, Business, and Education Discussed Innovative Thoughts for Asia’s Development

Macau University of Science and Technology, Boao Asia Forum, and Macau Youth Federation jointly held the first “Boao Asia Development Forum (Macau)” at Sands Cotai Central, Cotai Strip on May 18, 2015. The theme of the Forum was “Knowledge Interconnection – Innovative Thoughts on Asia’s Development”. It has attracted more than eight hundred elites from government and business and scholars from mainland China, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau and other regions to convene and discuss new thoughts on Asia’s development.

Vice Chairman Edmund Ho Hau Wah of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Acting Chief Executive Sonia Chan Hoi Fan of the Macau SAR., Director Li Gang of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government, Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong of Boao Asia Forum, Deputy Director Zhou Bo of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Commissioner Hu Zhengyue of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao SAR, Secretary Leong Vai Tac for Economy and Finance of Macao SAR, Chancellor Liu Chak Wan of Macau University of Science and Technology, Vice Chairman Deng Zhonghan of All-China Youth Federation, President Wu Zhiliang of the Administrative Committee of Macao Foundation, Ms. Leong Lai, delegate of Director of the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture and Director of the Education and Youth Bureau of Macao SAR., President Ma Chi Nga of Macao Youth Federation, and President Liu Liang of Macau University of Science and Technology addressed the Opening Ceremony of the Forum.

Opening ceremony of the first Boao Asia Development Forum (Macau)

When addressing the Opening Ceremony of the Forum, Secretary General Zhou Wenzhong said that the influence of the Boao Asia Forum has been increasing regionally and globally, it was hoped that by way of sharing, new thoughts for Asia’s development could be approached, and Macau should center on the goal of establishing world center for tourism and leisure and move ahead to moderately diversified economy and sustainable development.

Acting Chief Executive Chan Hoi Fan mentioned that the Forum has provided a platform for exchange of views among the elites of different fields of Macau and Asia, through the Forum, important topics could be discussed in depth, such as adjustment of development strategies by Asian countries and regions, transform of development models, and exploration of new development space by way of structural reforms.

Deputy Director Zhou Bo noted that the sub-themes of the Forum, “knowledge interconnection”, “youth innovation”, and “creative tourism” have demonstrated an active vibe and was emitting positive energy of the time; this has filled Macau with new vitality for exploration of moderate diversification of economy and sustainable development, and construction of world tourism and leisure center and business and trade platform for China-Lusophone countries. 

Commissioner Hu Zhengyue spoke that innovation drives development, knowledge leads the future, and Asia’s development must take knowledge as its pillar; he expected that the Forum could make new contributions by providing a new platform for the guests to discuss the grand plans for Asia’s development.

President Ma Chi Nga believed that Macau would make greater efforts in exerting its role of being the platform and tie that links China and the Lusophone countries; he hoped that the Forum could be constructed into a new platform for exchange of views and held regularly in Macau.

When addressing the Opening Ceremony of the Boao Asia Development Forum, President Liu Liang of Macau University of Science and Technology noted that faced the trend of integration of global economy and regional development, as well as the fast development of knowledge economy, the Internet, and technological innovations, apart from bringing to ahead the integration of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau economies and enabling joint development and industrial interconnections between Macau and Asian countries, Macau must make available new space and resources for moderately diversified development of economy, and Asia’s development will also gain new momentums out of Macau’s participation.

The Forum consists of two branch sessions, themed respectively as “Youth Innovation: the Future of Asia” and “Creative Tourism: New Engine of Economy”, and was able to invite a great many prominent speakers to talk in depth about these two topics. The guest speakers include Mr. Denes BAN, Partner of OurCrowd, the world’s leading equity crowdfunding platform from Israel, Mr. Deng Zhonghan, Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology and Vice Chairman of All-China Youth Federation, Mr. Lu Jia, Principal Conductor of Macao Orchestra, Ms. Glória Batalha Ung, Executive Director of the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, Mr. Joao Manuel Costa ANTUNES, former Chairman of Pacific Asia Travel Association, Mr. Francesco BANDARIN, former Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, and Ms. Maria Helena DE SENNA FERNANDES, Director of Macau Government Tourist Office.
