Dr. Tam Chon Weng Officiated Opening Ceremony of M.U.S.T. Prof. Zhou Qi Feng and Prof. Lin Yi Fu Conferred Honorary Doctoral Degrees of M.U.S.T.

M.U.S.T. held the 2016/2017 Opening Ceremony and Ceremony for Conferment of Honorary Doctoral Degrees at 11 a.m. on September 10 (Saturday), 2016 at the University’s gymnasium in Block J. Secretary of Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng officiated the Ceremony and conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon two renowned remarkable individuals: Prof. Zhou Qi Feng and Prof. Lin Yi Fu. For this academic year, M.U.S.T. recruited 1,800 new undergraduates and 1,200 new graduates; more than 2,000 guests, students, and teachers attended the grand ceremony. At the ceremony, the University also gave out the Dean’s List scholarships to students, and the Bank of China Research Awards and the Teaching Excellence Awards to winning teachers.

Prof. Zhou Qi Feng is a renowned polymer chemist; he mainly conducts research in relation to the field of polymer synthesis and liquid crystalline polymers, and has generated research achievements that are of great significances and originality. Prof. Zhou is also a well-known educationist, having made tremendous contributions to development of China’s higher education. Prof. Lin Yi Fu is the first scholar who studies China problem using scientific modern economics theories and methodologies; he is an economist that has great impact in both the Chinese economics community and the international economics community. The academic achievements and economic philosophy of Prof. Lin introduced a new way of thinking to China’s opening and reform and to the development of world economy, which has greatly amazed the world. At the Ceremony, M.U.S.T. respectively awarded Prof. Zhou Qi Feng Honorary Doctoral Degree in Science and Prof. Lin Yi Fu Honorary Doctoral Degree in Business Administration.

President of M.U.S.T., Chair Professor Liu Liang addressed the Opening Ceremony, noting that honorary doctoral degree is the highest honor the University is able to give, which is usually given to remarkable individuals who have made significant contributions to the society; for the university to choose to confer the degrees to Prof. Zhou and Prof. Lin at the time of the opening ceremony, it is hoped that it would greatly enhance the M.U.S.T. scholars’ sense of commitment and sense of professionalism, as well as our faith in developing excellent education and extraordinary research, and that it would empower the students to challenge themselves, increase their confidences, and strengthen their sense of responsibilities and sense of commitment in serving the society and making contributions for the country. President Liu Liang also noted that Macau University of Science and Technology is a comprehensive university, which has the largest scale in Macau, owns great vision, and aligns closely to the forefront of time, and after sixteen years of fast development, the University has built up a stage where students can have dreams come true; he expressed hopes that M.U.S.T. students become highly desirable talents that are equipped with not only professional expertise but also humanistic qualities.

Secretary of Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture, Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng delivered an address at the Ceremony, noting that the great contributions of the two outstanding professors, Prof. Zhou Qi Feng and Prof. Lin Yi Fu, match the supreme honors that M.U.S.T. presents to them by conferring honorary doctoral degrees upon them, and that M.U.S.T. is a symbol and epitome of Macau’s fast development and tremendous progress in its higher education sector after it returned to the motherland; he expressed wishes that M.U.S.T. continued to strive for greater progresses, improve its teaching quality, foster more talents for Macau and for the nation, and make even greater contributions for the development of the society. At the end of his speech, Dr. Tam encouraged the new students to embrace the new journey of their life, overcome difficulties and break new horizons, and never cease their steps in reaching new heights. Ms. Feng Yan, Course Coordinator of Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, represented all M.U.S.T. faculty and delivered a welcome speech. She gave an interesting interpretation to the initials of the University, M.U.S.T., in association to the best wishes she holds for the new students: M (mature), being independent and to think critically, U (unique), having your own unique selling point, S (self-motivated), learning things actively, and T (team-spirited), being a good team player. She sincerely hopes that students put their best efforts to everything they do, and utilize their prehistorical power to reach their full potentials.

Other principal guests that attended the Ceremony included Director Xu Ting of the Department of Culture and Education, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Director Li Nan of the Public Diplomacy and Journalism Department, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Acting Director Chang Kun Hong of the GAES, members of the M.U.S.T. Foundation, the University Council, and the Advisory Committee, M.U.S.T., representatives of scholarship-providing institutions, representatives of other local higher institutions and secondary schools, etc.
