Secretary Alexis Tam Officiates M.U.S.T. Congregation 2017

Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) held the 2017 Congregation at the M.U.S.T. indoor gymnasium on June 10, 2017. This year, the University has approximately 2,600 graduates, including bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorate degrees.

The Congregation was officiated by Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao S.A.R.; guests who attended the Ceremony include Mr. Shao Bin, the Assistant of the Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R.; Mr. Zheng Xinyou, Director-General of the Department of Public Diplomacy of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao S.A.R.; Deputy Director Chang Kun Hong of the Tertiary Education Services Office; Chairman Chui Sai Cheong of the Board of Trustees of the M.U.S.T. Foundation, Dr. Liu Chak Wan, Chancellor of M.U.S.T.; members of the M.U.S.T. Foundation, the University Council and the Advisory Board; officials of local government departments; representatives from scholarship donors, internship institutions, local higher institutions and secondary schools, parents and friends, and faculty members.

President Liu Liang addressed the Congregation; he noted that as the largest-scale comprehensive university in the local community, M.U.S.T. has been committed to whole-person education, academic research, cultural transmission and serving the community, and has exerted an important role in furthering social-economic development and humanistic progresses. Over the past years, as the students accomplished their personal growth here, the University has also accomplished its own leap-frogging development and made important contributions for the development of local higher education and science and technology. In the future, M.U.S.T. will continue to respond closely to the demand of the time, stand in line with the national development strategy and the demand of Macau’s social development, and optimize its development strategies in time, further reinforce national and international cooperation, deepen cross-disciplinary innovative research, and spare no effort to train extraordinary talents, who are equipped with both professional knowledge and humanistic qualities and therefore satisfy the demands of the time and social development.

President Liu Liang sent words of encouragement to the graduating students that there is no life that does not encounter any difficulty, and no matter how many obstacles are standing in the way, they will become conquerable if the students never forget their original passion. He hopes that all the students take as a lifetime lesson to elevate their humanistic qualities and cultivate upright values, conduct self-review, self-discipline and self-adjustment regularly, and eventually accomplish self-improvement.

Chairman Zhou Ligao of the M.U.S.T. University Council addressed the Congregation, noting that the University had stridden forward steadily in the past year. The quality of teaching continues to grow, approaching excellence, and high-level, high-standard research outputs are emerging. The State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine (the SKL), which was approved of for establishment by Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, is generating ample achievements. With the fast development of the University in Chinese Medicine and information technology, a number of patents have been generated. The Lunar and Planetary Science Laboratory has already made some highly-acclaimed achievements. The University has been anything but self-complacent or close-minded, following closely the trends of the international academia, and has made continuous efforts in self-advancement.

Chairman Zhou reminded the graduating students should always remember the University motto, “Dedication to practical studies, and enhancement of knowledge, ability and quality”, fully exert the knowledge and skills they have learned in the University, dedicate hard work and endure hardships in new environment, create a splendid career and make new achievements, and make contributions to society and for development of the nation.

Secretary Alexis Tam Chon Weng congratulated the graduates in his speech, noting that while the students are about to enter another phase in their lives, they should have the awareness to incorporate their personal development in the development of the nation and Macau, a heart that loves both the nation and Macau, and a mind that aims to contribute to national development and Macau’s prospertiy, and only in this way, can they seize the opportunities afforded by national development, dedicate their own shares to the advancement and progresses of the nation and Macau, and eventually embrace and create a bright prospect for themselves.

Secretary Tam gave high praises to M.U.S.T., affirming that the University has fully seized two keys, “quality” and “innovation”, in the development of excellent quality education and extraordinary research, which has enabled the University to elevate its educational standard continuously, gain increasing impact nationally and internationally, and nurture generations of outstanding talents. The Macao S.A.R. would continue to give support to the development and progresses of M.U.S.T., helping the University to train more talents who not only are equipped with morality and capability, but also love both the nation and Macau.

Distinguished alumnus of M.U.S.T., also gave a speech. He shared his own experience to encourage the graduating students, saying that his life attitude has been to take up new challenges continuously and to give his best on everything. He appreciates the morale he had in the student era. The strong spirit became a strict demand for me, not satisfied by our own improvement, nor give up by the difficulties faced.

On behalf of all the 2017 graduates, Cai Zhen Hua, master’s degree graduate from School of Business and Yang Di, bachelor’s degree graduate from University International College gave speech in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Portuguese. They said the University’s “diversified” culture was the most impressed during the time they spent at M.U.S.T. This has not only enabled them to embrace a broader international vision but also encouraged them constantly to showcase their talent and fulfill their potentials.

The 2017 graduates come from Faculty of Information Technology, School of Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Chinese Medicine, Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Faculty of Health Sciences, University International College, and the Institute for Social and Cultural Research.
