Student from College of Business of Macau University of Science and Technology has won the 2018 English Festival English Singing Contest, organized by the English Language Center of Shantou University, held in early December. The English Festival aims to promote English as a language medium of international communication and facilitate exchanges among teachers and students in the Asia-Pacific region. This has been the 16th year that the English Festival was held. Each year, Shantou University invites student representatives from renowned universities of the Asian region to participate in a series of competitions made provided by the festival.

This year, Assistant Professor Lei Kai Cheong, Coordinator of the General Education English Program of University International College at M.U.S.T., was invited to take M.U.S.T. students to participate in the event; also invited to participate in the event were Shanghai International Studies University, Kyoto Sangyo University, Taiwan Chinese Culture University and National Chengchi University.
The English Singing Contest is one of the series activities launched by the English Festival, and altogether ten finalists, mainly top award-winning contestants of the internal English singing contests of the participating universities, entered this contest. Xie Yunyao, student of School of Business, choreography was led by Kong Juchao, a M.U.S.T. freshman. After a round of fierce competition, approximating professional standards, Xie Yunyao entered the final round successfully making her one of the top five finalists; eventually, with her perfect singing techniques, standard English pronunciation, and passionate and devoting stage presence, she stood out among the finalists and won the championship in this contest.
This is the second consecutive year M.U.S.T. students win the championship in this Singing Contest. As a non-English major, Xie Yunyao was able to perform and express her thoughts in English, which shows the potentials and talents of M.U.S.T. students and demonstrates the great quality and achievements of M.U.S.T. education.
