M.U.S.T. Approved to Offer Macao’s First “Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery” Program

Macau University of Science and Technology was approved by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao S.A.R. to offer the first “Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery” (MBBS) program in Macao. The program will start the admission of students in the 2019/2020 academic year, lead the training of the first generation of medical professionals of Macao’s own, and contribute to the continuous progress and development of Macao’s medical qualities so as to improve the local medical services standard for local residents.

Since it was founded in 2000, M.U.S.T. has been making active efforts to promote high-quality higher education, align closely with the needs of Macao, commit to stand in line and implement the Policy Address of the Macao S.A.R. to “prosper Macao through education, develop Macao with talents”, and train excellent talents who love Macao and the motherland. As local population continues to age and migrant population and tourism volume continues to grow, the social demand for medical services increases significantly. The newly approved MBBS program answers the growing need for medical professionals, and is bound to build a system of local medical resources and offer a friendly medical environment for citizens.

President Liu Liang of M.U.S.T. expresses thanks to the Macao S.A.R. for its support to the University on opening the medical program. He points out that the program will not only train doctors for Macao, but also will attract a number of experienced senior doctors and medical research talents to seek careers in the territory. Following the inauguration of the new program, M.U.S.T. will also move to establish a medical school that combines the existing resources of Faculty of Chinese Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicines, to exert synergetic forces, conduct cross-disciplinary studies, move forward research in the medical field and make contributions for human well-being.

The M.U.S.T. “Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery” program adopts ability-oriented medical education, is devised by drawing references from the modern educational framework of Hong Kong, the U.K., and the U.S., and aims to cultivate tomorrow’s doctors who are well-equipped with expertise, skills and abilities, moral ethics and professionalism. The program consists of six years of studies, including five years of regular classes and one year of clinical studies. The curriculum covers, along with basic sciences and human anatomies, advanced courses such as internal medicine, surgery, community and family medicine, medical specialists and clinical practices and intern studies. The program will be taught in an integrated, unit-based interactive group study pedagogy. Upon graduation, students will be qualified to become licensed doctors in Macao. As long as the graduates follow the corresponding laws and regulations of the Department of Health of the Macao S.A.R. to apply for the license, they will be eligible to practice medicine in Macao.
