Vice President Gao Xiang of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Attends M.U.S.T. Program Briefing for Doctor of Philosophy in History

The Institute for Social and Cultural Research, Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), held a “Seminar on Macao History Research Since Return to China in Retrospect and Prospect & Program Briefing for Doctor of Philosophy in History” at 501 in Block A of M.U.S.T. in the morning of June 3, 2019. Mr. Gao Xiang, Vice President and Member of the Party Committee of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and concurrently Director and Party Secretary of the Institute of History of the CASS, Mr. Ji Xiangde, General Secretary of the Supervising Committee of Chinese Local Chronicles and Director of Office of the Supervising Committee, Mr. Yu Xinhua, Deputy Secretary of the Institute of History of the CASS, and Prof. Lin Guangzhi, Director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research attended the meeting. Before the Briefing, the Institute of History of the CASS and M.U.S.T. signed a cooperation agreement, aiming to promote the development of history as a discipline at M.U.S.T.

The attending guests concurred that the opening of a Ph.D. in History doctorate program at M.U.S.T. would further reinforce research, education and communication of the Chinese and the Macao history, and take the disciplinary development of history and cultivation of talents at M.U.S.T. to a higher level. Compared to similar programs at home and abroad, the Doctor of Philosophy in History at M.U.S.T. has the following characteristics: 1st, it is the first program to integrate Chinese and Macao history into its curriculum; 2nd, it combines the strengths of the talent-cultivation models of home and abroad, oriented toward training of academic abilities; 3rd, there is logical clarity and sensible structure in its curriculum design, integrating development planning of history studies into doctoral educational process; 4th, the faculty is a team of teachers impressive in number, balanced in structure and high in recognition.

Vice President Gao Xiang gave a speech to congratulate M.U.S.T. on opening the Doctor of Philosophy in History, gave high praises to M.U.S.T. in its endeavors in humanities and social sciences, especially in disciplinary development and academic explorations in the field of history. He noted that the Institute of History of the CASS would make great efforts to support academic research and cultivation of talents in the Macao S.A.R., deepen research, promote and impart the Chinese history and culture, move forward research and development of the Macao history and culture. He also suggested the program to incorporate the succession of Chinese history and culture with patriotic values, to explore cultural exchanges and mutual learning experiences between Chinese and western cultures in the context of Chinese historical narratives, to grow the history program at M.U.S.T. to make academic contributions for the new practices of the “One Country Two Systems”, the formulation of the new outlooks of China to open up to the world in the new era, and the long-term prosperity and stability of Macao.

The Doctor of Philosophy in History program is the first in Macao that takes Chinese and Macao history as its core; the name of the degree program stands in line with the corresponding program and degree names of the National Ministry of Education, and also with standard international practices (both in Chinese and in English: Doctor of Philosophy in History).

Library, General Editor Tian Weiping of the South China Quarterly, University of Macau, Deputy General Editor Chan Chi Hung of the Journal of Macao Polytechnic Institute, President Chan Su Weng of Macao History Association, Lei Ip Fei of the Cultural Heritage Committee of the Macao S.A.R., Chong Chon Fai, Supervisor of the Chinese Culture Pavilion of Pui Ching Middle School, and Assistant Director Zhao Dianhong and Dr. Yu Yuanyuan of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research, M.U.S.T.
