M.U.S.T. “Memory – Deconstruction/Construction Artwork Show” Held Successfully in Portugal

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland and the 40th anniversary of the establishment of relations between China and Portugal, the Centro Cultural de Belém and the Museu Coleção Berardo, Portugal, invited Distinguished Guest Prof. Ung Vai Meng of Faculty of Humanities and Arts (FA) and Librarian Chan Hin Io of Macau Image Gallery, which is affiliated with the University Library, to jointly put on the “Memory – Deconstruction/Construction Artwork Show” in the hope of reinforcing cultural exchanges and ties between Macao and Portugal and establish a bridge for friendship between the Chinese and Portuguese people.

In the 10-meter show rooms displayed both graphic images and three-dimensional art pieces

The Opening Ceremony of the art show was held at the Museu Coleção Berardo in Lisbon, Portugal, in the afternoon of November 6, 2019. The attending guests at the Ceremony include Mr. Li Ji, Cultural and Educational Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Portuguese Republic, Mr. Ronaldo Berardo, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Berardo Foundation, Ms. Rita Lougares, Artistic Director of the Museu Coleção Berardo, Ms. Lúcia Abrantes dos Santos, Director of the Macao Economy and Commercial Delegation in Lisbon, and Mr. So Shu Fai, Member of Macao Culture Advisory Committee. Former Governor of Macao Mr. José Eduardo Martinho Garcia Leandro and former Director of Macao Cultural Bureau Ms. Gabriela Pombas Cabelo were also present at the event.

The Centro Cultural de Belém of Portugal, where the art show was held

The two artists centered their artistic creations on Macao memories. The entire display further addresses the themes of memory, worship of ancestors, weightlessness, rituals and heaven. The works on display contain art pieces created by the artists within the last two years, including a great diversity of photographs, decoration, videos, and sculptures. It deploys five big exhibition haws of the museum, and is adorned with five colors, including red, blue, black, yellow and white. What’s more, in order to help promote Macao’s nontangible cultural heritages, the show invited two highly experienced constructors and flew them purposely to Lisbon to construct a massive octagon bamboo garden house, which is 8-meter tall and 10-meter wide located at the center of the main show room, to showcase the traditional folk wisdoms of the Chinese.

The art show is supported and sponsored by the Alumni Federation of Macau University of Science and Technology and Macao Foundation. The show will be on display from the date to February 9, 2020.
