Chen Baosheng met with M.U.S.T. Delegation

Minister Chen Baosheng first extended warm welcome to Chancellor Liu Chak Wan, President Liu Liang and the other M.U.S.T. delegation members, and said that it was the first time that he received visiting delegation from Hong Kong and Macao universities since the outbreak of COVID-19.

Chancellor Liu Chak Wan expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education (MOE) for its guidance and support to M.U.S.T. and recalled that on his visit to MOE last year, Minister Chen expressed hopes for M.U.S.T. to build on the impressive achievements it has made and make greater progresses to “Grow in Macao, prosper in the Greater Bay Area, and thrive in the world”, which the M.U.S.T. community has kept near to their hearts. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of M.U.S.T. As the first non-profit private university founded in Macao since the Macao Special Administrative Region was established, which loves the country and Macao, the University has achieved fast development and progresses and has made significant contributions to economic development and societal advancements in Macao as well as to Macao’s in-depth integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. M.U.S.T. has scheduled its 20th anniversary celebrations to be held in the upcoming November and Chancellor Liu Chak Wan would like to invite Minister Chen and other MOE leaders to attend the celebrations and share the joys with the University.

President Liu Liang expressed thanks to the MOE leadership for making time to meet with the M.U.S.T. delegation, and he gave a report on the new developments and main achievements accomplished by the University over the past years. With the great support of the Central People’s Government, the Ministry of Education and the Macao S.A.R. Government, the University has grown significantly in terms of its overall educational strengths and academic ranking, with its scale of faculty teams enlarged, improved academic standards and research outcomes reaching new heights. After two decades of hard work, M.U.S.T. now owns 2 state key laboratories and 4 partner research bases and joint laboratories with key institutes of MOE and has received a plethora of state-level and provincial/ministerial level awards and prizes. During COVID-19 pandemic, the University speedily assembled its elite forces to battle against the epidemic, and ranked No. 1 in the key research subjects subsidized by the Macao S.A.R. Government, thus becoming Macao’s main battle ground in fighting against COVID-19 through science and technology. President Liu Liang introduced the “Three-Step-Approach” path implemented by the University, which comprises the development of an outstanding talent force and frontier technology platforms, publication of high-level papers and patents, and promotion of industrialization for research outcomes and patents. The approach has laid a solid foundation for the University in developing innovative science and technology and industrialization, expediting transfer of research achievements, ensuring bright prospects for industry-education-research synergetic development and contributing to adequate diversification and sustainable development of the Macao economy. Meanwhile, M.U.S.T. takes full advantage of the One Country, Two Systems mechanism and policy strengths, aligns closely with the emerging demands for science and technology development and innovative talents from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, plays to the uniqueness and strengths of M.U.S.T., seeks to deepen partnership and cooperation with institutions within the Greater Bay Area, and integrates proactively into the Great Bay Area national development strategy.

After hearing the report of President Liu Liang, Minister Chen Baosheng made remarks, saying that it was not easy for M.U.S.T. to make such accomplishments in the context of COVID-19. With such a short time period, M.U.S.T. was able to become the fastest-growing university across the nation, which is no easy task and deserves congratulations! He hopes that M.U.S.T. would continue to build on its current accomplishments and put in even more hard work, uphold tight to the principle of loving the country and Macao, foster patriotism and sense of responsibilities to family and the nation among students, and strive to cultivate more talents and successors to contribute to national development and the successful implementation of One Country, Two Systems. He further expressed expectations that the University could continue to carry out the important instructions made by Chairman Xi Jinping for universities in Macao, to fully seize the two key elements, “quality” and “innovation”, invigorate the faculty forces, and promote high-quality development of higher education and academic research of the University. Minister Chen encouraged the University to construct a harmonious campus, reinforce national spirits and contemporary awareness in education, place emphasis in improvement of overall qualities in students, and integrate individual growths with national destiny. The minister noted that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development strategy is accorded great significances by the nation, and MOE would continue to give support to M.U.S.T. in its future development.
