First Prize of
Natural Science Award in Macao Science and Technology Awards

article10071807xThe ceremony of biennial Macao Science and Technology Awards was held on October 7th 2020 at Macao Cultural Center. Many government representatives attended the ceremony and presented prizes for the winners: Lei Wai Nong, Secretary for Economy and Finance and the representative of Chief Executive of the Macao S.A.R.; Yao Jian, Vice Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R.; Ran Bo, Director of Policy Research Section of Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao S.A.R.; Raimundo do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works and Vice President of the Science and Technology Council of Macao; Chan Wan Hei, Administrative Committee of FDCT. In this ceremony, there were 16 projects winning the Natural Science Award, Technological Invention Award and Technology Progress Award. M.U.S.T won the first, second and third prizes in the Natural Science Award, and the second prize in the Technology Progress Award. In terms of the Postgraduate Science and Technology Research and Development Award, 13 postgraduates of M.U.S.T won this award.

The project of State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences of M.U.S.T “Research on the surface and the interior structures of Moon, asteroids, and giant planets” won the first prize of the Natural Science Award. This project was mainly completed by Associate Professor Zhu Menghua and Chair Professor Zhang Keke of State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences.

Other winning projects of M.U.S.T include: “Establishment and application of ISO international standard systems for Chinese medicinal materials” won the second prize in the Technology Progress Award, which was mainly completed by Chair Professor Liu Liang, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of M.U.S.T and Director of State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Dean of Faculty of Chinese Medicines Professor Zhou Hua, Associate Professor Xie Ying, Dr. Huang Yufeng and postdoctoral researcher He Fan of Faculty of Pharmacy; “Pharmacology based drug discovery and development” won the second prize in the Natural Science Award, which was mainly completed by Director of School of Pharmacy Professor Zhu Yizhun; “Characteristic Molecular Profiling for Discovering New Drug Targets and Bioactive TCM Components” won the third prize in the Natural Science Award, which was mainly completed by Chair Professor Jiang Zhihong, Vice President of M.U.S.T and Vice Director of State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Associate Professor Wang Jingrong, Associate Professor Bai Liping, Chair Professor Liu Liang and Assistant Professor Zhu Guoyuan.

In March 2011, the Macao S.A.R. government promulgated “Regulamento dos Prémios para o Desenvolvimento das Ciências e da Tecnologia” (Regulation of the Prizes for the Development of Science and Technology) to reward those who have made contributions to science and technology activities in Macao. Sixteen projects stood out and won Macao Science and Technology Awards after the rigorous evaluations in the three stages: peer expert evaluation, initial evaluation by the award committee and conference evaluation. In addition, 30 postgraduates won the Postgraduate Science and Technology Research and Development Award through the recommendation of Macao institutions of higher learning and the strict evaluation of FDCT.

In recent years, M.U.S.T has attached great significance to both teaching and research, attracted hundreds of excellent talents from all over the world, created multiple innovative and high technology platforms in the cutting-edge research fields, and actively expanded high-level academic exchanges and cooperation between different countries and regions, in order to achieve technology innovation abilities and to rapidly promote the academic influence in and beyond China. In the new era, M.U.S.T will fully grasp the historic opportunity of building an innovative country and developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The university will determine the main direction of science and technology development in accordance with the social needs to promote the appropriate and diversified economic development in Macao; meanwhile, it will maintain innovative thinking and the practical and realistic scientific spirit, and pay attention to the innovative research as well as the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements to enhance cooperation and integrate science and technology with the social and economic developments.
