In response, the President first pointed out that the university understands the students’ concerns due to the tuition adjustment. He and Director Kwong Ying Wa then responded to each question raised by the students. He stressed that the decision to make adjustment to student tuition is a result of careful consideration by the university, taking mainly into account the adverse effect of currency inflation, RMB appreciation, and increasing educational cost in Macau. He particularly explained how the increased income from the tuition adjustment will be spent in improving teaching facilities, employing excellent teachers, raising the salary of academic and research staff, so as to insure the overall educational quality of the university. Meanwhile, the President also stressed that no student would be allowed to drop out of school due to the increase of tuition, since those who have financial troubles can make applications to the university in writing to ask for help from the university and the university will consider covering part of the balance with student aid grant. The representatives of the Student Union stated that it is helpful for the students to give feedback to the university’s decision. Not only this meeting has built a bridge between the university and the students for better exchange of views, but also by communicating with the university principals in person, they are getting to understand reasons behind the tuition adjustment. The President agreed that the channel of communication between the university and students is always open and timely communication will prevent misunderstandings.
