Academician Chair Professor Chi-Ming Che delivered a distinguished lecture on “Fighting Against Metastatic Cancers”

The Medical Sciences Division (MSD) and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine jointly held the 2nd Distinguished Lecture Series “Fighting Against Metastatic Cancers” on 19th October 2023, in N316. We invited Chair Professor Chi-Ming Che, Zhou Guangzhao Professor of Natural Sciences and Chair of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences, and Founding Member of the Academy of Science of Hong Kong to give a lecture entitled "Fighting Against Metastatic Cancers". Vice-President Paul Tam welcomed and thanked Chair Professor Chi-Ming Che for giving our students and teachers a keynote speech. Vice-President Jiang Zhihong presented a souvenir. The lecture was simultaneously broadcast live on the online platform.

In a research seminar, Professor Chi-Ming Che discussed conventional strategies for advanced cancer treatment, highlighting the limitations of existing chemotherapy drugs against aggressive forms like pancreatic and lung cancer. His work involves pioneering metal-based chemotherapy drugs, target identification of natural anticancer products, and innovative formulations of traditional Chinese medicine. Notably, Professor Che's research demonstrates the remarkable efficacy of these novel compounds in targeting and eliminating pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and ovarian cancer cells, offering promising advancements in cancer therapy.

Chair Professor Chi-Ming Che is the Zhou Guangzhao Professor of Natural Sciences and Chair of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong. He earned his PhD from HKU in 1982 and has since become an acclaimed figure in chemistry. His remarkable career includes being an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He's also a Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences and a Founding Member of the Academy of Science of Hong Kong. Chair Professor Che's research spans diverse areas, from coordination chemistry to metal catalysis and chemical biology. He has published over 1,000 papers, cited more than 65,300 times, with an H-index of 129. In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Chair Professor Chi-Ming Che has been honored with prestigious awards such as 1st Class Prize of State Natural Science Award of China, the Huang Yao-Zeng Organometallic Chemistry Award of the Chinese Chemical Society – Lifetime Achievement Award, the Ryoji Noyori ACES Award, the Peiyang Lecture at Tianjin University, the Nankai Centenary Lecture at Nankai University, and the First Class Award of the 2019 Shenzhen Science and Technology. Additionally, he was awarded the Luigi Sacconi Medal in 2020 and the Silver Bauhinia Star of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2021.
