In response to the government’s strategy of “revitalizing Macao through education and building Macao through talent” and promoting the scientific and technological talent training plan, the Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE) of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has offered two short-term courses in science and technology to the Program for the Development of Scientific Innovation Talent of “Youth Science and Technology Village”. The two courses include “Artificial Intelligence in Medical Image Processing” and “Space Science and Aerospace Technology”. On the afternoon of September 9th, 2024, the first class of  “Artificial Intelligence in Medical Image Processing” was held at MUST after a simple opening ceremony. 

At the ceremony, Professor Li Xiaodong expressed a warm welcome to the students participating in the short course, followed by an introduction of FIE and the relevant background of this short course. He was excited to see the enthusiasm of the students and had expressed his expectations in the coming months.

After the opening ceremony, Assistant Professor Li Nannan from FIE commenced teaching the first class which was named “Basics of Machine Learning and Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Python”. He introduced the background of artificial intelligence and basic Python programming as well as image processing in a simple and easy-to-understand way which the students found highly interesting.

The Program for the Development of Scientific Innovation Talent of “Youth Science and Technology Village” is jointly organized by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the Macao Science Center and Galaxy Entertainment Group. The “Youth Science and Technology Village” students participating in this course come from 16 high schools in Macao. Through a combination of classroom lectures and online demonstrations, students will have a scientific understanding of the current development and application of artificial intelligence in the field of medical image analysis. This will be followed by the second short course “Space Science and Aerospace Technology” offered by MUST, which will start on September 23th, 2024.

Through these two short courses, high school students will discover and cultivate their interest in the field of artificial intelligence and space science, thus allowing more outstanding young talents to emerge in the field of science and technology and to contribute to the development of Macao.
