Professor Zhiguang Sun Appointed as Dean of Faculty of Chinese Medicine (MUST)

Effective January 2026, Professor Zhiguang Sun will officially assume the role of Dean of the Faculty of Chinese Medicine at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST). MUST’s management counts on Professor Sun’s strategic vision and academic excellence, and he will lead the Faculty of Chinese Medicine (FCM) toward new milestones in disciplinary development, talent cultivation, scientific research innovation, and the internationalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Professor Sun, M.D., postdoctoral fellow, is a Chief Physician of TCM and Professor. He has been dedicated to medical treatment, teaching and scientific research, and also serves as a doctoral supervisor. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1984, Master’s degree in Pharmacology of Chinese Medicine from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in 1991, and Ph.D in Gastroenterology (Western Medicine) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in 1996, followed by postdoctoral research in Internal Medicine of TCM at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM). He also completed advanced training at Changhai Hospital of Naval Medical University (formerly Second Military Medical University) and graduated from the “Advanced Hospital Administrative Management Training Program” at Harvard Medical School in 2016. Professor Zhiguang Sun has previously served as Chief Physician and Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology at the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), Director of the TCM Medical Administration and Science & Education Division, and President of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Second Hospital of TCM), and Vice President of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine.

In the fields of academia and management, Professor Sun has dedicated to advancing the modernization and internationalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Focusing on the clinical practice and research of traditional Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of digestive system diseases. He has led numerous key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and provincial/ministerial-level key research initiatives, developed multiple patented new Chinese herbal medicines, and has won 2 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize of the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. He has published 237 academic papers, and was selected for the second tier of Jiangsu Province’s “333 High-Level Talent Training Project” and the “Six Talent Peaks Project”. He was also honored as the first batch Outstanding Young TCM Practitioners in Jiangsu Province.

As the newly appointed Dean of Faculty of Chinese Medicine (FCM) at Macau University of Science and Technology, Professor Sun will lead the FCM towards a new stage of development with strategic vision. He will focus on promoting disciplinary development and internationalization, improving the training system for TCM professionals, and promoting deep integration between TCM and modern medicine and life sciences. In addition, he will enhance research platforms and innovation capabilities, build high-level research teams, and strengthen industry-university-research collaboration and will drive the coordinated development of Macao’s TCM industry with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Simultaneously, he will deepen international cooperation by establishing exchange mechanisms with world-renowned universities and research institutions, fostering an open and shared academic ecosystem, and enhancing the global influence of the FCM.

The Faculty of Chinese Medicine (FCM), under the Medical Sciences Division at MUST, has been one of the founding faculties since 2000. Today, it stands as Macao’s sole higher education institution with a comprehensive TCM curriculum and the only TCM school in China affiliated with a State Key Laboratory. With the supported of an eminent faculty team and advanced research platforms, the FCM is committed to nurturing high-level TCM professionals.
