The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) 2026 Congregation was successfully held on the morning of May 30 in the Auditorium of the R Building Complex Teaching Building. The ceremony was officiated by Ms. O Lam, Representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture.  

Distinguished guests attending the ceremony included Mr. Shi Shuzheng, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR; Mr. Gao Yuan, Counsellor and Director of the News and Public Diplomacy Department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in Macao; Mr. Kong Chi Meng, Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Dr. Liu Chak-wan, Chancellor of MUST; Mr. Chui Sai Cheong, Chairman of the Trustee Committee of the MUST Foundation; Prof. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Chairman of the Advisory Committee; members of the MUST Foundation, University Council members and Advisory Committee members; government officials; representatives from major enterprises, scholarship sponsors, associations, societies, local higher education institutions and secondary schools; parents, family members, faculty, and staff. They all witnessed the graduates successfully completing their studies and reaching this important milestone in life. 

The total number of graduates from various faculties and institutes this year is approximately 6,750 (approximately 490 doctoral graduates, 3,100 master's graduates, and 3,160 bachelor's graduates). The ceremony was broadcast live online, allowing online viewers to witness this important moment as the graduates embarked on new journeys in life. In addition, each faculty and institute of MUST will hold their own individual graduation ceremonies.、

Address by Ms. O Lam, Representative of the Chief Executive and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture

Ms. O Lam, Representative of the Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, delivered a speech on behalf of the Macao SAR Government, extending her warmest congratulations to all graduates and expressing sincere gratitude and high respect to the dedicated faculty and staff, parents, and all sectors of society. She noted that Macau University of Science and Technology was born with Macao and thrives through science and technology. It has always closely followed the national development strategy and the needs of the SAR’s development, growing into a comprehensive university with wide influence. In particular, President Xi Jinping’s visit to MUST and his earnest instructions injected strong momentum into the university, leading to continuous and steady improvement in its educational standards. The SAR Government has always strongly supported the development of MUST. It is currently actively aligning with the nation’s “15th Five-Year Plan” while formulating Macao’s own “3rd Five-Year Plan,” and will strongly support Macao’s higher education institutions in extending their operations in the Hengqin Cooperation Zone. This will help the university deeply integrate into the overall national development and build a broader platform for growth.

Secretary O Lam emphasized that graduation is not only a new starting point for youth but also a new beginning for shouldering missions. She expressed three earnest hopes for the graduates: 1. To cherish the country and Macao, inherit the fine tradition of patriotism and love for Macao, and keep the development of the motherland and Macao in mind; 2. To deeply cultivate professional knowledge and hone strong skills, becoming proactive innovators in the AI era; 3. To actively participate in major national strategies such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Hengqin Deep Cooperation Zone, and demonstrate the responsibility of young people by serving the greater national agenda. She encouraged the graduates to always remember that “youth meets a prosperous era, and missions should be bravely shouldered,” and to contribute their youthful strength to the country’s high-quality development and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. She also sincerely wished MUST continued success in its educational mission and wished all graduates a bright future and smooth sailing ahead.

Address by Chair Prof. Zhu Jian-kang, President of MUST

President and Chair Professor Zhu Jian-kang delivered a speech, stating that today we gather together to witness all graduates of the Class of 2026 successfully completing their studies. On behalf of the University, he extended the warmest congratulations to all graduates and expressed his most sincere gratitude to the dedicated teachers who have nurtured them, the parents who have provided silent support, and the distinguished guests who attended the ceremony. President Zhu noted that over the past few years, the graduates have walked alongside the University, jointly creating glory. Through the concerted efforts of all faculty and students, the University’s overall strength and international influence have continued to rise. Its educational achievements have been widely recognized by all sectors of society, and it was awarded the 2025 Education Merit Medal by the Macao SAR Government. He praised the graduates for being both witnesses to the University’s development and active contributors to its honors. With the sweat of their youth, they have deeply embodied the spirit of the University motto “Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality.”

Facing an era where a century of change intersects with a wave of technological advancement, President Zhu emphasized that a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating. Artificial intelligence is reshaping daily life scenarios, and new quality productive forces are leading the wave of development. As new-era youth nurtured by MUST, the graduates possess both patriotism and a global vision. They are not only participants in the digital intelligence era but also the successors of the new era.

On this occasion of parting, President Zhu put forward four hopes to all graduates: First, always maintain a spirit of exploration and become practitioners of lifelong learning. In today’s world, where knowledge and technology are changing rapidly, he hoped that graduates would always preserve their curiosity and thirst for knowledge, cultivate cross-disciplinary thinking, and make learning a habit, so as to respond to the changes of the times through continuous learning. Second, bravely shoulder the responsibilities of the era and become a driving force for innovative development. He encouraged them to carry forward the University’s development philosophy of “Empowering Macao through Science and Technology, Building Macao with Talents,” integrate their personal ideals into the overall development of the country and Macao, become an important force in advancing scientific and technological progress and regional innovation, and write a glorious chapter of serving the country through science and technology with youthful responsibility. Third, uphold the principle of pragmatism and become steadfast builders through hard work. He hoped that graduates would not only look up at the stars but also keep their feet firmly on the ground. Starting from the grassroots and small details, they should accumulate experience and create value in ordinary positions, thereby opening up a wonderful life of their own. Fourth, embrace benevolence and compassion and become promoters of a harmonious world. He encouraged them to uphold moral conscience, care for others and give back to society while pursuing personal success, strive to become new-era citizens with warmth, responsibility, and vision, and convey the warmth and positive energy of “MUSTers” to the world.

Finally, President Zhu stated that the alma mater will always be the graduates’ safe harbor. No matter where they go, he hoped they would remember the teachings of their alma mater, hold fast to their ideals, stay true to their original aspiration, and forge ahead with courage. He also looked forward to them returning often to visit their alma mater, paying attention to its development, and joining it in embarking on new journeys and composing new chapters together. He sincerely wished all 2026 graduates a bright future and smooth sailing ahead, and wished all distinguished guests, teachers, and parents good health and every success.

Address by Graduate Representatives

The graduate representatives were Tian Yiyan from the PhD program in History at the Institute of Social and Cultural Research, and Ho Yuen Yi from the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program at the Faculty of Medicine. On behalf of all graduates, they expressed high respect and sincere gratitude to their alma mater and teachers. They noted that in recent years they had witnessed the rapid development of MUST firsthand — from traditional Chinese medicine research to space science. The university has continued to advance in scientific innovation and international cooperation, opening broad horizons for its students. Tian Yiyan shared that under the university’s nurturing, he mastered three languages and had the honor of accompanying Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, on a public health assistance project in Timor-Leste, turning what he learned into practical power for connecting the world. Ho Yuen Yi shared her growth through clinical rotations and her experience studying public health and artificial intelligence at the University of Oxford, deeply realizing the value of using one’s knowledge to bring warmth to others and contribute to society.

The two representatives emphasized that the university motto “Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality” has guided everyone to seek truth and be pragmatic while exploring the essence of things. They also noted that “MUST” stands for “Make Unlimited Stories Together.” They encouraged all 2026 graduates to carry the teachings and expectations of their alma mater, using technology as wings and humanities as the foundation, with patriotism in their hearts and the world in their embrace, to set sail bravely and pursue their dreams. They also jointly wished all 2026 graduates a bright future and hoped that Macau University of Science and Technology would continue to thrive and achieve new brilliance.

On the same morning, MUST held the second joint meeting for the 2025/2026 academic year of the MUST Foundation, University Council, and Advisory Committee in the N101 Auditorium. Forty-eight members of the Foundation, Council members, and Advisory Committee members attended. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Chui Sai Cheong, Chairman of the Trustee Committee of the MUST Foundation. President Zhu Jian-kang reported on the University’s work summary and development plan for the 2025/2026 academic year. He highlighted that the University had signed multiple cooperation agreements in academic exchange and strategic partnerships, established the Artificial Intelligence Cross-Application Research Institute and Wang Qi College, and successfully hosted important academic events such as the Kishore Mahbubani Lecture. The University is currently developing vigorously, with steady increases in student numbers, international rankings, and the number of top scientists. Twelve disciplines have entered the top 1% globally in ESI rankings, the WeMust platform for AI computing power sharing has been built, and high-level research achievements have been produced in national key laboratories, lunar and planetary science, and the Faculty of Medicine. Looking ahead, the University will deeply engage in technological innovation strategies, integrate resources, and focus on frontier fields such as space technology, longevity science, and carbon-silicon intelligence integration, while comprehensively enhancing the academic atmosphere, teaching quality, and accelerating the transformation of research outcomes. Mr. Tsui Wai Kwan, Supervisor of the MUST Foundation, read the Supervisory Committee report, and Chair Prof. Joseph Hun-wei Lee, Chairman of the Advisory Committee, reported on the Advisory Committee’s work. Chancellor Dr. Liu Chak-wan expressed gratitude for the contributions made by successive presidents to the University’s development.
