Professor TSUI Lap-Chee talked about "The Journey from Molecular Geneticist to University President"

Organized by the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), the "Journey from Molecular Geneticist to University President" was successfully held on March 6, 2024 at the D Auditorium of M.U.S.T.. The lecture was given by Academician Lap-Chee Tsui, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a renowned higher education and genetics scientist, President Joseph Hun-wei LEE presented Professor Lap-Chee Tsui with a certificate of appointment and a gift of the master lecture collection, welcoming and thanking Academician Lap-Chee Tsui for delivering the lecture to the faculty and students of M.U.S.T..

From President Joseph Hun-wei LEE of M.U.S.T.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Tsui led audiences to review on his career path, from childhood anecdotes to becoming a highly respected scientist and educator. Professor Tsui gave an in-depth lecture on biochemistry and molecules from various perspectives, emphasizing that different substances have different genes. In particular, he explored the diversity of DNA and pointed out that although DNA has a certain sequence, sequence variation within the genome is a common phenomenon, which he illustrated with examples.

Next, Professor Tsui gave an in-depth analysis of cystic fibrosis and other diseases, mentioning that relevant experiments must be carried out to draw conclusions and that a large amount of data must be collected during the study to facilitate later inspection and analysis. In addition, he analyzed the research results on the CFTR gene, explaining the effects of mutations during protein maturation, and explored the therapeutic approaches for this disease.

At the end of the lecture, Professor TSUI Lap-Chee emphasized the importance of teamwork and innovation, sharing his experiences of collaboration in different disciplines and fields, and stressing his patience and persistence in solving difficult scientific problems. He also mentioned the importance of teaching and emphasized the responsibility and mission of nurturing the next generation of researchers.

The seminar was successfully concluded by Professor TSUI Lap-Chee concluding remarks and a question-and-answer session, in which students expressed that they had a clearer understanding of molecular biology.
