MUST MBBS Graduate Becomes First Alumnus to Pass the Hong Kong Medical Licensing Examination

The Faculty of Medicine of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) is proud to announce that Mr Joseph Liu Tsz Chung, a graduate from its inaugural Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) cohort, has successfully passed the Hong Kong Medical Licensing Examination (HKMLE), becoming the first graduate of the MUST MBBS programme to achieve this milestone.

The HKMLE is a rigorous professional assessment required for doctors holding medical qualifications from outside Hong Kong who wish to practise medicine in Hong Kong. Success in the examination reflects a high standard of medical knowledge, clinical competence, and professional preparedness.

Joseph completed the 5+1 MBBS program in 2025 as the historic inaugural cohort and subsequently began the HKMLE process which consists of written and practical examinations. This achievement therefore demonstrates the ability of graduates from Macao's first medical school to meet the standards required for entry into one of the region's most competitive medical licensing systems. It also represents an important milestone for Joseph’s professional journey.

Professor Manson Fok, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, congratulated Joseph on his accomplishment. "We are delighted to congratulate Joseph on becoming the first alumnus of the MUST MBBS programme to pass the Hong Kong Medical Licensing Examination. This achievement is a testament to his dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence. It also represents an important milestone for the Faculty of Medicine, demonstrating that our graduates are well prepared to meet international standards and pursue medical careers across different healthcare systems."

Reflecting on his success, Joseph expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his medical training.

" I am honoured to have passed the Hong Kong Medical Licensing Examination and to be the first graduate from the MUST MBBS programme to do so. This achievement reflects not only my own efforts but also the support and encouragement of my family, Louise, my teachers, mentors, and classmates throughout my medical training. I am thankful for the strong foundation provided by the programme and look forward to continuing my professional development as a doctor in the years ahead."

Established in 2019, the Faculty of Medicine at MUST is Macao's first medical school and currently offers the territory's only MBBS programme. The programme is recognised by the Macao SAR Government and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, enabling graduates to pursue professional licensure pathways in jurisdictions around the world. The Faculty celebrated the graduation of the second cohort of MBBS graduates earlier this month. Joseph’s success will undoubtedly motivate others to achieve excellence.
