Building a High-End Platform for Regional and Country Studies: UIC at MUST Launches a New PhD Program in Latin American Studies
The University International College (UIC) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) continues to expand its frontier academic disciplines and has officially received approval to launch a PhD program in Latin American Studies on June 17, 2026, which will commence in fall 2026 for the new academic year. It’s now open for online applications until July 20, 2026.

As the global landscape continues to evolve, the importance of Latin America in international affairs, resource cooperation, sustainable development, and other fields is becoming increasingly prominent. Macao, as a bridge for long-term interaction between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, has also seen growing collaboration with Spanish-speaking countries emerge as a key focus of the Macao SAR Government’s efforts in recent years. With its distinct regional and cultural resources, Macao is well-positioned to advance academic and social dialogue between China and Latin America. In line with national development strategies and regional demands, Macau University of Science and Technology has integrated multidisciplinary faculty and research resources to systematically establish a PhD training focus in Latin American Studies, fostering a more in-depth regional and country studies system. The introduction of this PhD program not only enhances the university’s disciplinary structure in regional studies but also provides a high-end platform for Macao to deepen academic and cultural exchanges between China and Latin America.
This program is offered by the University International College (UIC), which was established in 2010. The UIC currently has over 70 full-time faculty members and offers a range of programs, including Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language Studies, Master of Arts in Foreign Language Studies, Master of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Master of Education, Doctor of Philosophy in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Doctor of Philosophy in Creative Writing, Doctor of Philosophy in Education, and Doctor of Education. Additionally, the UIC administers examinations such as the IELTS, the Spanish DELE, and the Brazilian Portuguese CELPE-BRAS.
