First Lecture of “University Life” of Academic Year 2026/2027
On September 13th 2026, the first "University Life" general education lecture organized by the Department of General Education (DGE) at Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) was successfully held at the R109 Auditorium. The event featured Vice President PANG Chuan, Associate Professor ZHAO Hai Xia and Assistant Professor XIANG Fang from the University International College (UIC), and teachers from the Culture and Sports Development Office as speakers for over 4,000 new undergraduate students to share their insights on university studies.

Vice President PANG Chuan delivered a speech via video
The lecture began with Vice President PANG Chuan delivering a speech via video. He welcomed all first year undergraduate students and hoped that they would study hard and strive upwards. He introduced the necessity and importance of the "University Life" course, encouraging freshmen to use it as a compass in life to form a correct outlook on life, values and the world. He emphasized the University's concept of "Whole Person Education" and the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents with broad knowledge, a global vision and innovative ability.
He then introduced the historical and contemporary positioning and characteristics of the Macao Special Administrative Region, hoping that freshmen would familiarize themselves with local laws and regulations as well as the University's rules and discipline, and adopt a university learning model different from that of secondary school: while delving deeply into a specific field, they should also broadly explore multiple disciplines, cultivate critical thinking, and build an interdisciplinary knowledge system.
Finally, he reminded students of two points: first, generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Doubao, Claude and AI Agent) are only auxiliary tools and cannot replace human thinking and creation. Students should avoid over-reliance, pay attention to the University's latest policies, and let AI assist rather than become a shackle; second, they should guard against telecom fraud. He wished the students four years of health, happiness, academic success and a pleasant life, with the University as their solid backing.

Associate Prof. ZHAO Hai Xia from UIC

Assisstant Prof. XIANG Fang from UIC
Associate Professor ZHAO Hai Xia and Assistant Professor XIANG Fang from UIC shared insights on "Introduction to University Studies." Starting from interesting short stories and questions to the students, the two professors gradually introduced three breakthroughs in the history of world higher education regarding the development of university ideas and their causes, and conveyed the mission, goals and functions of university education through the MUST motto "Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality." Finally, they hoped that through four years of study, all students would possess the five attributes expected of MUST graduates: educated learner, honest and conscious, innovative, civic-minded and global perspective.

Briefing by Represtatives from the Culture and Sports Development Office
The "University Life" course also invited staff from the Culture and Sports Development Office of MUST to introduce campus culture, which takes "Dedication to practical studies, Enhancement of knowledge, Ability and Quality" as its spiritual foundation, takes equal emphasis on teaching and research and innovative development as its driving force, takes cultural diversity and openness and inclusiveness as its campus atmosphere, broadens students' horizons through international exchange and professional competitions, and responds to public needs with social responsibility and sustainable development. The session ended with the teaching of the University Anthem, hoping that every newcomer who joins the MUST family will become a disseminator of the university spirit by singing the University Anthem together.
This "University Life" course is a compulsory course set up for new undergraduate students by MUST, aiming to help freshmen transition into university life smoothly and quickly as well as to plan for their future career paths through a series of comprehensive, interdisciplinary lectures and practical experiences.
