Well-known Chinese pharmacy expert gave a speech about the application of nanotechnology

On October 16, 2020, at the invitation of the Cross Straits-Hong Kong-Macau Collaboration Center of Science and Technology in Chinese Medicine, Professor Weidong Chen from Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine visited Macau University of Science and Technology and gave a speech entitled "Research on the Active Ingredients of Traditional Chinese Medicine by Nano-carriers ". Associate Professor Xie Ying hosted the lecture.

Professor Chen introduced that the application of nanotechnology in drug delivery systems has great prospects. Modern research has shown that the absorption and metabolism of drugs by organisms is a complex process. This is not only related to the unique chemical components of the drug itself, but also to the drug. The physical properties are closely related. When the size of drug particles reaches the nanometer level, the particles exhibit new physical, chemical and biological properties due to quantum size effects and surface effects. Professor Chen pointed out that nanotechnology has many advantages in the research and application of traditional Chinese Medicine. It can improve the bioavailability of traditional Chinese Medicine, enhance drug targeting, promote the passage of drugs through biological barriers, and can be designed into a slow-release preparation. Conventional nano-formulations are easily cleared by the mononuclear phagocytic system. Professor Chen and his team discovered that the use of exosomes to deliver the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel can enhance the anti-tumor activity of paclitaxel, providing new ideas for the application of nanotechnology in the development of anti-tumor Chinese medicines.

This event is one of the "Lecture Reports for Distinguished Scholars in Traditional Chinese Medicine Research in 2020". It is sponsored by the Cross Straits-Hong Kong-Macau Collaboration Center of Science and Technology in Chinese Medicine and undertaken by the Faculty of Chinese Medicine and the School of Pharmacy. The activity has received great support from the Macau Foundation.
