On the afternoon of April 18th, Professor Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore of Griffith University from Australia visited Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) and gave a lecture titled “Gender in Tourism: Issues and Potentials” at N213 for the teachers and students on campus.
Professor Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore started with the development of women as travelers from the past to the present, explained the great potential of the female market, and gave the cases of female travelers in Southeast Asia and Australia, to help students understand the rise of the new travel market: solo women travel.
Professor Catheryn Khoo-Lattimore also pointed out that although women travelling solo is an emerging and promising market, it needs to be handled carefully – there are language and safety issues, and there is great room for improvement in terms of gender equality in tourism: in employment, leadership, and community management.
Professor Khoo-Lattimore’s speech was full of witty words, and the atmosphere was lively. In the final Q and A session, students and teachers raised questions and Professor Khoo-Lattimore answered them in details and with patience. The lecture ended successfully and it was funded by Macao Foundation.
